Indians to sign Mark Reynolds

According to multiple reports, the Indians have agreed to sign Mark Reynolds to a one-year contract worth $6M plus incentives. He’s going to play first base for them.

The Yankees reportedly had some interest in Reynolds for their third base vacancy, but more importantly the signing figures to impact the Tribe’s pursuit of Kevin Youkilis. New York has a one-year, $12M offer out to the former Red Sox, and the Indians were their biggest competition due to their two-year offer and Terry Francona. This is no guarantee Youkilis will sign with the Yankees, but it certainly increases the odds of that happening.

  1. Dr. Vinny Boombatz says:

Would have rather had Reynolds for 1yr 6m than Youk for 1yr 12m that’s for sure.

The options are quite slim now.

To use the vernacular…this ain’t good…A-Rod continues to hurt the Yanks even when he is not playing…wow…sad really.

    • whozat says:

Reynolds is kind of a disaster at 3B, and I think (hope) that 2013 payroll is irrelevant, so I don’t know that I agree that Reynolds would be a better half-year fulltime 3B, and then backup 3B/1B than Youk.

  2. Hendo says:

    Bring back Mike Pagariula

  3. DZ says:

Saw this somewhere the other day, and even though it’s a questionable decision, is there anyway the yanks can move cano over to 3b just to start the year? Nunez at 2b would have to decrease his throwing errors as well. I know it won’t happen, but it’s an idea that I don’t think is being floated around as much as it probably should be.

  4. Dr. Vinny Boombatz says:

Good thing Jayson Nix cleared waivers

  5. Dshockiii says:

What are plans for David Adams if he isn’t traded? Putting up numbers and no place if cano stays.

    • Ted Nelson says:

He’s been playing 3B. I’m a big Adams fan, but still got to wonder about the ankle and getting some AAA time is unlikely to hurt his development.

  6. GEORGE1959 says:

  7. TJ says:

Cano will not move to third in a contract year. I was really hoping that Youk signed with Indians. Hoping for a great Spring Training from Adams.

  8. Mike HC says:

Definitely happy the Yanks stayed away from Reynolds. Getting Youk could really turn around this off season pretty quickly.

    • Electric Nunez II (Handle stolen w/o compensatory draft picks) says:

Funny, I said the same exact thing to myself regarding Youk. As in, “Youk could turn this s**t around”.

When youse get right down to it, he definitely one of them lynchpin motherf**kers to this upcoming season situation, of the whole baseball game in regards to the winning and the loosening.

Tell Big Member he ain’t the only one capable of hot n heavy analisation of this Yankee scene. I’d go so far as to say I topped him here. And as is par for the course, its one and done for me so I can’t top anyone else, so good night, all.

  9. Kevin G. says:

If the Yankees sign Youk, what happens when ARod comes back?

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

We point at Youk and laugh.

    • whozat says:

His playing time is reduced, but given that ARod will be eased back in and there will be ABs at 1B as well, there would still be playing time. Also, given his health issues, it’s no given that he won’t need DL time.

    • Brian S. says:

He continues to play third while A-Rod’s fragile ass DHs 80% of the time.

    • Pistol Pete says:

DH what else, we’re desperate for right handed hitters. Tex Arod and Youk would make a great 3b1b HDTV trio.

    • soxhata says:

Are you kidding? As someone who went to 20 or so games and watched most on directv,I am praying ARod doesn’t come back at all this year, and if he does, surely he will only dh.ARod should NEVER play 3rd again.Give Youk 2 yrs. He’s clutch, and plays better D than AFraud hands down.

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

You are the reason I hate people before they prove they should be liked instead of the other way around. Not people like you. You in particular. If you are actually a Yankee fan, you are the reason the rest of the league hates our fan base. If you aren’t a Yankee fan you are the reason that the base of Yankee fans is defensive or outright dislike other baseball fans.

        1. You don’t put spaces between your punctuation and the following letter. A 14 year old should be able to type properly, regardless of what device you are using.
        2. You blindly hate a player on the team you allegedly route for because of the money he makes.
        3. You would gladly accept taking on a lesser player to play the position of the objectively better player just because you don’t like the better one.
        4. Your blind hatred for A-Rod blinds you to the fact that even in his current state (if not in need of the surgery) he is still probably at worst better than 50% of other people who play that position
        5. You want to give a guy who gets hurt more than our most injured player 2 years.
        6. You use the fact you watch games live as a reason for something. I could watch the Large Hadron Collider operate 1000 times live. Outside of the basics, I would still have no idea how it works.

        • Erica says:

How did you miss that he watches games on DirecTV? CLEARLY he sees things we don’t.

I watch the games on DirecTV! And then it’s great when it rains and my satellite goes out! Damn you, satellite TV. Damn you.

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Haha, silly satellite user in the tri state area…hard line cables are the way to go, only time I’ve lost that w/o losing power was Sandy.

            • Erica says:

Oh man! Fios is the shiznit. It really is.

              • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Agreed 100%, my parents refuse to switch because IO is “good enough” and they don’t feel like learning new channels. When I move out (hopefully by summer) I plan on getting Fios if it fits in my budget.

                • Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

That’s funny you say that. During Sandy, my neighbors who have comcast and Fios all lost their TV/internet even the ones with generators.

I have DirecTV and once I plugged in my generator, I had TV all week

50+ foot pine trees in my backyard came down, roots and all but the damn satellite dish on my roof didn’t move an inch.

  10. Robinson Tilapia says:

Reynolds was never the right match as an Alex fill-in or backup. Not good defensively and beyond streaky at the bat.

Let’s see what happens with Youk. Would much rather have a solid veteran hand who could hit in his sleep in this slot.

    • JMK says:

Eh, I like Youk more than most but he’s not exactly automatic with the bat these days.

    • whozat says:

Why wouldn’t that player be starting somewhere else, probably on a multi-year deal? Several teams are looking for someone to hold down 3B.

    • Brian S. says:

Also we already have a Mark on the team. No Kevin’s though.

    • Pistol Pete says:

Agree, Reynolds strikes out too much and can’ t field. Youkalis is a much better fit. Love the DH First Base Third base trio when Arod comes back. Ichiro jeter cano tex Arod Youk grandy catcher and Grady not bad.

    • forensic says:

I’d rather have Youkilis over Reynolds too, but I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration of his abilities at this point in his career, though I am hoping for a bit of an offensive rebound from him.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

You guys are probably reading a tiny bit too much into what I’m saying. I’m talking more experience than expected results, although many of the vets the Yanks have brought in who have been described as past their prime have at least had some pretty big moments. I realize he’s a declined and fragile player.

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

Reynolds is not streaky. He strikes out at a pretty consistent rate.

  11. Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

No big deal. Reynolds could have never given the Yankees what they need at 3rd base. He would have been nice as righty side of the DH platoon and back up 1B but Youk would be a much fit.

  12. Austin Aunelowitzky says:

    Always loved Youk.

  13. Ethan says:

Man really don’t want youkilis. Was hoping we’d get reynolds instead.

  14. forensic says:

$6 million is a little lower than I thought he’d get, but I’m glad it’s not the Yankees. Youkilis isn’t such a bad idea, but I wonder if they might try to lower their offer a touch now with possibly less competition.

    • Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

Since they don’t have to worry about the celery cap in 2013, I hope they just get the deal done and don’t fuck it up over an insignificant amount of money.

I really believe they’re gonna need a guy who can give you 100-120 games at 3rd base though the resident RAB maniac commenter in the Ichiro thread attacked me for that thinking insisting that Arod is gonna be back, healthy and able to play 3rd base for a large portion of the season.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Best meme since ol’ Sammy Pearce?

        • Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

Celery cap is an instant classic. To steal one from Betty, I just Romaine (sic) can make the club to go along with it.

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Oh god…what did I miss? Celery cap sounds like it came from an incredible stream of consciousness by Big Member.

      • forensic says:

I don’t even want to go look at that thread now. I’m sure it started with him saying it’s going to be 3-6 months, though all reports are that it’s 4-6 months and he never changes his baseline off that.

        • Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

I pulled an article off Yahoo sports that said its expected that he could be out till the All star break and he wanted to know what “calculations” yahoo used to come up with that.

          Just classic.

  15. Jacob says:

I think cash should just break mark’s leg so we have to fill in 1B to, I would love to see if the trade proposals can get any more ridiculous

  16. Slappy McWaterbug says:

After signing Youk and Ichiro! all we’ll need is a time machine.

  17. Miked says:

  18. The Real Greg says:

I’m worried that the Dodgers will swoop in and sign Youkilis leaving the Yankees in the dark.

  19. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Still not a huge fan of signing Youk. I understand he’s the best option though. It’s like being a vegetarian starving on a desert island and be offered a rotting T-Bone steak. Sure you’re going to eat it because it’s better than starving to death, and you’re going to hope that it tastes something like the T-Bone steak it used to be, and you’re going to be grateful for the sustenance it gives you…but you’re still not going to be happy about having to eat it.

  20. paul a says:

Look at th bright side, if we don’t get Youk, Hannahan is still available.

  21. CashmanNinja says:

James Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals? Damnnnn.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

really? Source? did they get that hot-shot minor leaguer back in return?

      • Jacob says:

        Rays rolling in will myers

      • CashmanNinja says:

“Hearing #Rays have traded Shields AND Davis to #Royals. Working on confirmation and return” – Marc Topkin

I’m guessing Wil Myers is 100% involved, but the fact that the Rays wanted more than just the 1 prospect for Shields — and Davis is supposedly included — makes it sound like it’d be a bit more intriguing than originally expected. I wonder who else will be going to Tampa.

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Well Wade Davis is a nice pitcher, but he sure as hell isn’t great. I mean, up until going into the bullpen this season he was your basic 160IP 4+ERA starter and in the bullpen he was good but good bull pen arms are really a dime a dozen. The Yankees got good years out of Luis Ayala and Corey Wade for example.

          • CashmanNinja says:

Davis is dirt cheap. I think he’s $3 mil a year, not including options after the guaranteed part is up. A pitcher who can give you 170-180 innings with a 4 ERA for only $3 mil a year is a steal. The fact that he’s cost controlled is what makes him appealing to the Royals. This is a sly move, assuming they didn’t give up too much after Myers. I still think it would have been nice for them to keep Myers because a guy of his caliber is just…exciting. I’m honestly a bit nervous about the thought of Myers in Tampa. I don’t mind them losing Shields, though. He was great for them, and we seemed to always hit him around a bit, but losing him weakens that rotation big time. Yay.

            • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

That’s true…at that price he’s the perfect back end guy…but if I’m a Rays fan I have no problem giving him up as part of the trade to get Myers.

    • Jacob says:

      ahhh shiiiiiishhh

    • RetroRob says:

Interesting. For a team building like the Royals, parting with Myers is huge, but getting two years of Shields and another strong arm in Davis is probably worth the risk. They have difficulty getting pitchers.

  22. Erica says:

The Yanks should sign me. I can totally not hit a ball and I can’t catch one either. But they should still sign me!

    • Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

As long as you look good standing there, I’m OK with that.

      • Erica says:

I’ll fist pump with the fervor of Frankie Cervelli and run with the enthusiasm of Jorge Posada.

I have no idea why I’m now referencing catchers. EVERYTHING IS CONFUSING.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

didn’t at some point this past season we go through this and came up with basically a full team of posters?

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Yeah, I feel like we had you at 2nd, R-Tils put me in RF as a joke, Greg was on the team, I think you volunteered Betty as “back up” catcher, jjyank was on the team, as was R-Tils and maybe Havok as well…I forget the rest. It was either during a game or an open thread.

          • Erica says:

God, I miss those threads. I believe you! I can hop around like Dustin Pedroia, except when my knees hurt and then I’ll morph into A-Rod.

It’s a great team. Lots of potential. Good numbers in the post-season.

            • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Idk, I’m a very selfish player. I’m going to be trying to hit a home run, not because it’s the best out come of an at bat but because stat padding.

                • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

You know it ;) Also, it’s been a while, did your family get through the hurricane okay? I remember talking to JJ, his family lost power for a while, but he lives out in the sticks…and I think R-Tils lost it for a while too, but you weren’t around during that whole thing.

      • Jacob says:

I can hustle, call me your 9 hitter

  23. Dherz51 says:
