2013 Draft: Sean Manaea will not pitch again this season

Thoughts following the Granderson injury
Yankees claim David Huff off waivers; designate Francisco Rondon for assignment

3:10pm: I’m an idiot. Manaea will not pitch again because Indiana State’s season is over, not necessarily due to the injuries. Teams still will not get another chance to evaluate him before the draft, however.

1:00pm: Via Jon Heyman: Indiana State LHP Sean Manaea will not pitch again this season. He was scratched from Thursday’s start due to shoulder soreness and nagging hip trouble, which first popped up when he rolled his ankle earlier this spring and pitched through it. Here’s my profile.

Manaea, 21, came into the spring as a potential top three pick after a dominant showing on the Cape Cod League last summer. His stuff was not as lively this spring though, and his stock had been steadily dropping prior to be scratched a few days ago. The Yankees are one of the few teams with extra picks and draft pool money, meaning they’re in a position to gamble on a player like Manaea if they choose. I’m guessing he won’t get drafted high enough/offered enough money and returns to school for his senior season.

Baseball America had the Yankees selected Manaea with one of their three first round picks in their latest mock draft, but that was before the news that he will not pitch again this spring.

Guess I’m in the minority, but I’d prefer they not take such a huge gamble. Picking someone with a bad elbow is one thing. But a bad shoulder? No thanks.

He’s been dealing with nagging hip/shoulder issues but I don’t think that’s the reason he’s done pitching in the spring.

His team lost in the conference tournament and the team’s profile isn’t good enough to merit at large bid to NCAA tourney so team’s season is done and that’s why he’s not pitching anymore. The injuries are considered to be fairly minor and I read that he was considered available today if they won Friday.

Not a big fan of taking somebody that’s obviously hurt but if there was ever a year for the Yankees to take a gamble on somebody like this, this is the year with the extra picks/pool money.

I wouldn’t mind taking a chance if they think he could be valuable enough. I’d rather take a chance on a high talent with injury concerns than an average talent that is healthy.

I wouild hope that we wouldn’t be picking average talent in the first 36 picks, with apologies to DBJ and Cito Culver.

As long as the other two picks are slightly safer picks, maybe one sure thing solid arm and one position player, I’d still be willing to roll the dice. Most years if they miss on a guy like this, that’s all they get out of the first round, but they could gamble here, completely screw up, and still emerge with two first round quality picks.

Manaea’s team was eliminated from the tournament, so obviously he’s not pitching again this year. Whether healthy or not, it didn’t matter as there was no chance he was pitching again.

Whether he could have pitched again if needed is the question, although I thought the injuries were minor and he might have been able to throw this week.

    Best Axisa self-correction ever.

I’ll be happy if they draft Manea, because that means they think they can sign him. I’ll be sad if they draft him but don’t sign him. I’ll be sad if they sign him but then draft crap or don’t sign other good picks because he used up the money pool. Unless he stays healthy and dominates.

Go for it if the medicals look good!

I wouldnt mind this pick at all. The Dante Bichette and Cito Culver picks were criticized because many scouts didnt consider them first rounders. Before the injury, Manaea was considered top three, and there is no question he has the ability to pitch at that level. If he can recover from these injuries, he could be one of the best pitching prospects in baseball

with 3 picks in 1st round, Yankees will take some reasonable risk, but probably Manaea won’t sign for late 1st round money, advise by Boras
