Yankees call up David Huff, send down Dellin Betances

As expected, the Yankees have called up left-hander David Huff. Dellin Betances was sent to Triple-A Scranton to clear a 25-man roster spot, and David Phelps was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot. Phelps is out with a forearm strain that was expected to be season-ending, and this pretty much confirms it.

Huff, 28, has a 3.84 ERA (2.79 FIP) in 68 innings for Triple-A Scranton this year, and he threw 105 pitches on Sunday. I’m guessing the Yankees called him up a) to have a second lefty reliever for this weekend’s Red Sox series, and b) spot start during Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Blue Jays. They’ll need a spot starter at some point, either Tuesday or four days later, so I suppose Huff’s workload this weekend could determine when he makes the start. We’ll see.

Not what I would have done, but I’m not surprised. I sort of saw the writing on the wall when Joba came in and finished up for Dellin on Tuesday. What I would have liked to have seen was Claiborne saved a bit last night and Dellin back out there for the ninth. Fucked up the other night, kid? Well get back out there and try again.

Joba may be at the end of that bench, but there was still a seat for Dellin after that.

Yeah, if the plan was to send Betances back down, then they shoulda rung that sponge dry last night during another blowout.

I rarely say anything negative about the job Girardi does (#Polyanna) as I am not in the business of baseball and he is, but I would have thought getting the pitches out of Dellin and saving other arms was the prudent move.

Davey? Huffy? Der Huffenstein? Discuss all you want how he’ll be used. That’s inconsequential. How Girardi will refer to him, that’s the important stuff.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Hey, I love me some inconsequential pitchers that, somehow, come up big. I keep a picture of Dan Giese above my desk at all times. No, I don’t.

      I go with Huffy, btw.

      • MannyGeee

Girardi flips the script tonight and refers to him as ‘Duffy’…

  • Vincent Vega

I thought tmaybe he was being called up to replace Hughes.

That would make too much sense though

Funny how the guy who screams out “you take my incoherent posts and like them the way they are” is accusing other of being entitled.

You not seeing the connection between not being taken seriously on here and us barely being able to understand what you’re writing is incredibly sad. An intelligent person can see the difference between a couple of spelling errors and someone who can’t write. This isn’t “whoops….my damn autocorrect screwed up” level stuff.

You want to do things better? Then come on here and say, “hey guys, I struggle because it’s not my first language, but am trying my best” and see how the response you get on here is completely different. You trying to shove your ignorance down our throats, though? Nope, not buying it, and not backing off.

I replied nicely to your Preston Claiborne comment below last night. Let’s see if you can play ball when we ignore the fact that you can’t write like a grown adult and engage you as a fan, which there’s no doubt in my mind you’re an actual Yankee fan. This is the saddest part of this all.

Well there’s egg on my face.

WTF???lol You really are a fucking idiot.

      • Robinson Tilapia

For the good of the damn site, let’s keep this to the Soriano thread. Last thing I want is our shit polluting another thread.

      • MannyGeee

In fairness, this is not a very thought out argument. Any counterpoint that includes ‘lol’ and name-calling is automatically dismissed.

        • Robinson Tilapia

I hit reload on the Soriano thread, and suddenly, I had two Huff tabs open. No clue how that happened. Hopefully, Mike comes and erases it. This is in the actual Soriano thread as well.

        • nycsportzfan

Shoulden’t be a arguement anyways. It should never come to this on a freaking messege board. I’ve asked many times to be left alone if it isn’t baseball related and for some reason, it just can’t be done.

I could care less if any of you people think Tilapia is so awesome, and you stick up for em even when its so obvious whos in the wrong here. Some of you should grow a backbone and open your eyes.

      • jjyank

That…is not going to help your cause.

        • nycsportzfan

What? Calling someone a idiot who says this?

          Uhhh, oh well!

Nah. Keep him around. There’s perverse enjoyment in this.

  • MannyGeee

    Meh, inconsequential…

Teh binder sez ‘Moar Leftiez Matchupz!’

  • CashmanPaysBlackmail2Hookers

I heard David Huff is wearing #60 to honor of the number of “top” starting pitching prospects that have failed to develop in Brian Cashman’s farm system.

    • The Real Greg

Have to laugh at the name you chose today, whoever you are.

      • HughesClosedHisTwitterAcct

        Thank you.

  • Fernando

Would not be surprised to see Huff designated for assignment after the Red Sox Series, so they can bring up Marshall to start one of the DH games.

And then they send down Marshall after game 1 and recall another reliever.

  • Andrew Brotherton

I don’t know why the Yankees don’t just DFA Joba, he has no use on this team and has no future on this team.

  • Caballo Sin Nombre

They puffed, then they Huffed, then they sent Dellin down.
