Rehab Updates: A-Rod, Aardsma, Feliciano

August 31, 2012 by Mike 3 Comments

Got some updates to pass along on a trio of rehabbing big leaguers…

  • Alex Rodriguez (hand) went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk with High-A Tampa, his first minor league rehab game. He batted leadoff and served as the DH, grounding out to short the only time he put the ball in play. Depending on how his hand feels after this, A-Rod could play the field in tomorrow’s game.
  • David Aardsma (elbow, hip) threw a scoreless inning in the same game. He walked one batter, uncorked a wild pitch, and got three fly ball outs. No word on his pitch count or anything. This was his first game action since suffering a setback in late-June. Based on his previous rehab attempt, he’ll take two or three days off before doing it again. The minor league regular season ends early next week, however.
  • Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) allowed one run in an inning of work for Short Season Staten Island. He allowed a solo homer to a right-handed batter and otherwise recorded three outs in three different ways — strikeout, fly out, ground out. Feliciano threw just 13 pitches. No word on when he’ll be activated, but I have to think it’ll be sooner rather than later.

Aardsma to appear in minor league rehab game tomorrow

August 30, 2012 by Mike 5 Comments

Right-hander David Aardsma will make a minor league rehab appearance with High-A Tampa tomorrow, he confirmed. The 30-year-old has been shut down since late-June after suffering a setback in his return from Tommy John and hip surgery. Depending on who you ask, he either will or won’t return to the big leagues this season. Alex Rodriguez will play in that game as well.

If we’ve learned anything from Joba Chamberlain this month, it’s that you can’t count on pitchers returning from elbow surgery to be productive right away. Command is usually the last thing to come back, and Aardsma wasn’t exactly Mariano Rivera in that department to begin with. The minor league regular season ends next week, though the Triple-A and Double-A affiliates have already clinched playoff spots. Any rehab assignments could continue there. If Aardsma can get healthy and actually join the bullpen when rosters expand next month, there’s really nothing for he or the team to lose.

Aardsma throws 35 pitches in live batting practice session

August 25, 2012 by Mike 1 Comment

Right-hander David Aardsma threw 35 pitches in a live batting practice session today, including some sliders that he says had “good action.” The plan is for him to throw a simulated game on Tuesday, assuming the weather in Tampa allows.

Aardsma, 30, is working his way back from the setback he suffered in June following Tommy John and hip surgery. Depending on who you ask, he either will or won’t be able to join the big league bullpen this September. Considering that he still needs to get in some actual minor league rehab games despite the season ending in less than two weeks, Aardsma will be cutting it real close if he wants to come back this year.

Update: Aardsma “fully expecting” to return this season

August 7, 2012 by Mike 51 Comments

August 7th: For what it’s worth, Aardsma says he is “fully expecting” to return this season. He made 50 throws from 60-feet on flat ground yesterday as part of his rehab. As with most injuries of this nature, I’m in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” camp.

August 6th: Via Andrew Marchand, right-hander David Aardsma is not expected to return this season. The 30-year-old suffered a setback in his rehab from Tommy John surgery back in June. VP of Baseball Ops Mark Newman confirmed that the plan is to get him healthy for next season.

The Yankees signed Aardsma to a one-year deal worth $500k last offseason, and the contract includes a club option worth another $500k for next season. That’s essentially the league minimum and there’s no reason for them not to pick it up. Aardsma’s a hard-throwing, high-strikeout guy when healthy, and there’s no such thing as having too many of those guys in the bullpen. Even if he flops, it’s a no-risk move at that price.

Aardsma will rest for two weeks before starting throwing program

July 12, 2012 by Mike 5 Comments

Via Mark Feinsand, two doctors have recommended that right-hander David Aardsma rest for two more weeks before beginning a throwing program. He was shut down after feeling pain in his surgically repaired elbow about two weeks ago. Given this new timetable, there’s basically zero chance Aardsma will be able to join the bullpen before rosters expand in September. For shame.

Injury Updates: Gardner, Joba, Banuelos

July 6, 2012 by Mike 18 Comments

Injury updates? Injury updates!…

  • Brett Gardner (elbow) will take dry swings at some point this weekend, his first time doing any sort of serious baseball activity since suffering his second setback. If all goes well during his latest rehab attempt, he’s expected back at the end of the month. [George King]
  • Joba Chamberlain (elbow, ankle) faced six batters during a 25-pitch simulated game this morning. He struck out three, walked one, and allowed a hit. He and the team will get together to discuss the next step, which could be a minor league rehab game. [Mark Didtler]
  • Austin Romine (back) caught Joba today. Two days ago we heard that he still a few weeks away from returning to game action. [Didtler]
  • David Aardsma (elbow) has not resumed throwing and is still awaiting test results after feeling pain in his surgically repaired right elbow about a week ago. [Didtler]
  • Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) continues to throw bullpen sessions and figures to begin facing hitters in live batting practice at some point soon. [Didtler]
  • Manny Banuelos (elbow) has been throwing in Tampa for a few weeks now according to Dellin Betances. The two are close friends. Still no timetable for Manny’s return, however. [Josh Norris]

Injury Updates: CC, Feliciano, Nunez, Aardsma

Two days ago we learned that Joba Chamberlain is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment within two weeks. Here are some more injury updates courtesy of Chad Jennings and George King…

  • CC Sabathia (groin) played catch prior to last night’s game and will throw a bullpen session — his first since going on the DL — on Friday. The team still expects him back right after next week’s All-Star break.
  • Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) threw a bullpen session in front of the braintrust yesterday. He’s currently throwing every three days but the plan is to bump him up to every other day at some point. Joe Girardi said there’s a legitimate chance the southpaw will help the team this season, but I wouldn’t count on it. Anything they get out of him is gravy.
  • Eduardo Nunez (thumb) is on the Triple-A disabled list and has just started taking batting practice. “He hopes to play in a couple of weeks or so,” said Girardi.
  • David Aardsma (elbow) went for various test following his recent setback, but the results aren’t available yet.
