The Peavy rumor that just won’t die

By

As Joe noted a short while ago, no one knows much of anything in Las Vegas. For Exhibit A, let’s take a look at yet another Jake Peavy rumor.

According to a tidbit in the Chicago Sun-Times, Jake Peavy wants to be a Cub, but seems to expect to land with the Yanks if the Cubs deal falls through. So, over the last few months, we’ve heard various rumors saying that the Yanks are in and out of the Peavy deal, that Peavy doesn’t want to leave the NL or the NL West or doesn’t mind coming to New York, that he will or won’t be traded to the Cubs or the Braves.

Basically, this is a prime example of no one knowing anything. No one knows anything about Peavy. No one really knows anything about CC Sabathia‘s state of mind, the Angels’ intentions with Mark Teixeira, or what’s going on in Manny’s head. So when you start reading reports about what players want or don’t want, take them with a rather large grain of salt.

Hat tip to Will in Chicago for e-mailing this one in.

Aw geez, not this shit again!

  2. A.D. says:

Per commenter “Shabazz” on the “Peavy Expects to land with Yanks” link,

Hendry is an idiot. Derrick Lee, Soriano and Zambrano should all be let go. They are not winners. The cubs need players that aren’t affected by the 100 year pressure. They need players with the charisma and assuredness to carry the team during the playoffs. Manny and Sabathia would do the trick, and by parting ways with these bums the money should work out. Another manager that senses the urgency and seizes the moment wouldn’t hurt either. Lou is a regular season manager!

If that isn’t pure gold, then I don’t know what is

didn’t pete abe ask towers about it and towers said peavy doesnt want to leave the nl?

  4. jsbrendog says:

I KNOW! i just took a huge dump. it was great.

  5. Will in Chicago says:

What no credit for breaking this story for you?

  6. Corey says:

and u have yet to answer my question about A-Rod over at WW :P

    • Ben K. says:

      I’ll answer here.

I’d trade A-Rod for Hanley straight up as long as the Marlins are assuming the contract because you would be trading a 32-year-old third baseman for a 25-year-old short stop who should be one of the best players in the game for a good seven years. You’re gaining premier offense at a tough position, payroll flexibility and youth. I love A-Rod, but in a Utopian world, that’s an easy trade.

      • Chip says:

Brian Cashman would also make that trade in an instant. I’d also trade him straight up for Evan Longoria. You could do either one of those and sign Texiera, CC, Sheets and Dunn giving you a lineup of

        LF-Damon
        SS-Jeter
        3B-Longoria
        1B-Texiera
        RF-Dunn
        CF-Swisher
        DH-Nady/Matsui
        2B-Cano

        Rotation of
        CC
        Wang
        Sheets
        Joba
        Hughes/Pettite/Aceves/IPK/whoever else is left

and probably still be under the salary with A-Rod there. Plus, most of those new guarantees would be over before A-Rod’s contract expires, PLUS, you get Longoria’s prime years while losing some of A-Rod’s prime years with his over-paid decline years.

  7. christopher says:

WOW,,,Francesa is actually saying the yanks should look at garland

  8. christopher says:

would be shocked if Peavy actually said that unless he said “I would expect them to try to trade me to the yanks”

If he did indeed say that then one would assume he would accept a deal there if nothing materialized with the cubbies

  9. Joey h says:

uNCONfirmed rumor. CC declines the yankees offer.

  10. Manimal529 says:

IF we get Peavy, would CC still be our top priority?

  11. Yankee1010 says:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....r-meetings

The link says Burnett could get 100 million for 5 years from the Yanks. They’ll finish defrosting Hell before that happens.

That might be even dumber than signing Garland. But really, both are monumentally dumb. Francesca is really exposing himself as a dolt right now. Not that people didn’t know it before.

  12. Jacob says:

If we don’t get CC (and with every day that goes by it looks to me like he wants to be a Yankee less and less) then I think Peavy is our next best option, especially when the news broke that we could get him without giving up Hughes. San Diego is going to have to accept a 2nd rate offer after they balked at the Braves. IMO, a deal of IPK, Romine, and Coke may be good enough to get it done when push comes to shove. And even if it isn’t, we have enough depth in the minors where we can include a Z-Mac or someone like that and not lose a whole lot. As long as the deal doesn’t include Montero, Brackman, Hughes, Betances, AJax, or Joba then I probably do it if it means getting Peavy.

    • Chip says:

CC just spent the last couple of days grilling Cashman about what it’s like to live in NY and he’s suddenly not interested? He’ll talk to the Giants who won’t offer enough to make the Yankees increase their offer and then take the Yankees offer.

Peavy would also require Hughes at least (don’t listen to unconfirmed reports) and there’s ZERO indications he’d approve a trade here anyway (which you can believe because it’s come from both Tower’s and his agent’s mouths that he hasn’t approved a trade outside the NL)

  13. Joey H says:

Who else loves this? Ramped rumor frenzy? It’s the best, I love it.

  14. christopher says:

Perhaps this rumor can be our salvation from this nonsense with CC. Doubt it, but you never know

Left-hander CC Sabathia isn’t going to make a decision about where he’s going to pitch for at least another week. He’ll likely wait until first baseman Mark Teixeira signs, because the Angels are in the mix for both players. Sabathia hopes the Angels, Dodgers or Giants will step up and make an offer once they settle some of their other pursuits.

    –stark

Nothing like being a player’s fallback option. I know one of the reasons people are giving is that this is a major life decision, but 2 arguments against that:

    1. He had to know all through last year that the yankees would be giving him an offer. He never thought of it before

    2. Has anyone here ever been offered a job in another state? Has that job given you a one month window to decide. I know that we dont make 20 million a year, but is moving our family for 75K any less significant.

To me it is clear that he is hoping that one of the Cali teams will come close to the yankees offer. There is a good argument to be made to give him a deadline on the offer and see how serious he is about really wanting to stay in California or even pulling the offer. I just cant stand the idea that this guy is using our offer to take a whirlwind tour around california to see if anyone will make an offer.

Now we have to wait for the California teams to sign their free agents and figure out their finances. We totally take ourselves out of the Texeria negotiations hoping that the Angels (best regular season team in baseball) gets better by getting Tex so that we can have their left-overs. After Tex signs, we will hear that he waiting to see if the giants can trade Zito, or to see if the dodgers will get manny IN FEBRUARY.

They are moving finally on other pitchers which is good, but they wont touch the offense until the pitching is resolved according to Cashman. So who will the team miss a chance on while they wait for the fat-man to order his food.

  15. Will in Chicago says:

Much appreciated! By the way, there is news out of Chicago again this hour that the Cubs “are nowhere near a trade with Peavy.” The source cites Jim Hendry, the General Manager of the Cubs. This could mean that the Yanks are bigger players than they think in the ongoing Peavy sweepstakes.

  16. Lloyd Johnson says:

PLug PEAVY into that rotation, and ..away…we go. Lets see now: Peavy, Wang, Hughes, and Joba ???????? How can you compete with a 3-man staff, and a bunch of ????? No matter how you cut it, the Yanks NEED two front line Starters, or a near miracal? Lets look again at the Roster, Yanks needs: 1st Baseman, Gonzalez or TEX?????? 2nd Baseman: If we are lucky enuff to unload “Bad Attitude Cano,” that would mean Roberts, or Hudson? Right Fielder: Unless we do the correct thing and Re-Sign Abreu? And surely a Center Fielder: should be McLouth. We surely don’t need known losers such as Dunn, Pie, and some of these oddball names that have been thrown around lately. And, if you think SWISHER solves anything, your a dreamer. What the hell did we need with an ( at best) .260 hitter?
