Sanchez, Williams among prospects with most trade value

By

In an Insider-only blog post, Keith Law ranked baseball’s best prospects on contending teams in terms of their trade value. SS Jurickson Profar of the Rangers tops the list, followed by RHP Gerrit Cole of the Pirates and OF Oscar Taveras of the Cardinals. The Yankees didn’t place anyone in the top ten, but C Gary Sanchez and OF Mason Williams rank 13th and 15th, respectively. They would have ranked higher had it not been for the whole Single-A thing — kids at the upper levels have more trade value because they’re closer to contributing.

On the other side of the coin, Kevin Goldstein posted an article (Insider req’d) looking at prospects who have lost trade value this season. Both LHP Manny Banuelos and RHP Dellin Betances made the list thanks to their disappointing seasons, the former due to an elbow injury and the latter due to control problems. The Yankees are kinda stuck in trade bait limbo right now, with their top chips in the lower minors and their upper level chips struggling.

    Mason Williams that high? Wow.

I would not part with him for Cliff Lee, let alone Headley.

This may not be a bad thing since MAYBE it’ll force the front office to hold on to these kids so we can potentially have some homegrown stars. Team needs to stop outsourcing and build within. I understand that prospects are not gauranteed to make the majors but I really want to see Mason and Gary develop

You’re supposed to use your farm to make your team better.. Their sole purpose isn’t to contribute as a member of the yankees. Were Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez (with Betemit) gonna make the yankees better than Swisher did? AJax Coke and IPK gonna make us better than Granderson and Logan?

I’d like to see the kids as much as anyone else, but it’s not like we don’t have any home grown players.. Jeter, Cano, Nova, Hughes, Joba, DRob, Mo, Nunez, Cervelli, Phelps. None of the top teams are built strictly from within.

That said, I’d also like to see Sanchez and Williams on the Yankees, but I wouldn’t be opposed to trading them for something that’ll help this team out for a while. Those guys are getting dumped for a rental.

Good to see Williams and Sanchez getting some love. Bummer about Manny and Betances though.

Mike, how much time do you think Betances has left as a starter before they try him out in the bullpen? Beginning of 2013, or maybe mid season 2013?

Banuelos will return to top prospect status in short order once he’s healthy. Betances return to top prospect status is going to be much more diffucult…and unlikely.

I’m surprised Tyler Austin doesn’t have more trade value. I’m guessing next year all three will be much higher on the list as all should be in Double A by midseason. I just hope Bichette and Culver can catch up. I would love it as well if we could get some new names to follow next year.

Austin gets marginalized because of his position, in order for a RF to be an elite player he has to hit like Bautista or Hamilton. Since Sanchez and Williams are at premiere positions their offensive output doesn’t need to be nearly as elite in order for them to be superstars. That said he could easily be the best of the three.

If White Sox still want Betances that bad this offseason then Yanks can make a small swap with them.

White Sox get Dellin Betances and Francisco Cervelli/ or Chase Whitley for Drew Garcia and Scott Snodgress.

    White Sox’s benefit:

    * Give Betances a chance to revive his prospect status with different team.

*Cervelli may not make any sense but he has MLB experience and AJ is 37 years old.

*Whitley is a reliever who may be ready for MLB action next season.

*I think Cervelli is out of options for minor job so he has to be 25 man roster next year and Girardi is likely to keep Stewart. If Stewart is gone then it is Chase Whitley.

    Yanks’ benefit:

*Drew is SS/2B who struggles against AAA but has a good track of below AAA. He should replace Ramiro Pena who burned all options. He has 2 or 3 options left. It makes sense for him start in AAA with first or second middle infielder calling for MLB, depending on where is Nunez.

*Snodgress is a big lefty and wont need to be added to 40 man roster for another 2 years so that means he has a shot to be with AAA before adding to 40 man roster like Adam Warren and Manuel Banuelos.

Or just Dellin Betances for Scott Snodgress straight up.

Why? Two wasted spots will go to Jose A. Ramirez and Nik Turley. Both wont be ready for MLB action but few teams would love to get them for bullpen now and then turning into SP like Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez. I can’t let it happen so taking Betances out of 40 man roster to make a room for immediate impact veteran is essential.

actually, when talking about the yanks and baseball players, u go by AVG.. Martin and nix don’t have huge avg’s this yr, and in nix’s case, his career.

I would prefer that they trade their pitching prospects because they have so much vulnerability on the ML roster due to age that they need to keep their offensive prospects.
