Yanks place Kelley on DL, call up Zoilo Almonte

The Yankees have placed Shawn Kelley on the 15-day DL with a “strained lumbar spine,” the team announced. Outfielder Zoilo Almonte was called up from Triple-A Scranton to fill the roster spot. The DL stint is back-dated to last Tuesday, so Kelley is eligible to be activated one week from Wednesday. The Yankees currently have a six-man bullpen (assuming Al Aceves is starting Thursday) and a five-man bench. Weird.

Kelley, 30, missed a few games last week with tightness in his lower back. It apparently went away over the weekend — he warmed up in Sunday’s game but did not pitch — but returned yesterday. He was not available last night. In 16 games and 15.1 innings this season, Kelley has a 3.52 ERA and 2.38 FIP. He has a long history of elbow problems (two Tommy John surgeries) but this is his first back trouble.

Almonte, 24, will give the team some extra outfield depth now that Carlos Beltran has a bone spur in his elbow and Ichiro Suzuki‘s back is sore. The Yankees aren’t going to carry a six-man bullpen forever, and with Chase Whitley in line to be called up on Thursday, Almonte’s stint in pinstripes may be short lived. He has hit .273/.324/.470 (121 wRC+) with six homers in 33 Triple-A games this season.

With Kelly out, Adam Warren will likely take over as David Robertson‘s primary setup man. Dellin Betances also figures to take on some more responsibility as well. The only Triple-A pitchers who are currently on the 40-man roster are Jose Ramirez and Shane Greene, so the Yankees are running out of arms. Hopefully Kelley returns next week and we never hear of his sore back again.

Called for this move last night. Hope Zoilo gets a bunch of ABs. Because, why not?

  • TheRealGreg

    Two years, Two M*A*S*H* units.

I know it’s not all Cashman’s fault, but paying for old players will get you this.

We need a new voice in this organization.

    • Guest

      Kelley is 30.

Closer to being a youngblood than an “old player”.

Also, have you ever had a sore back?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Only 1 of 6 players currently on the Yankees DL is over 30.

Clearly they need to start avoiding all of these injury prone youngsters.

Betances is the set up man!

Clueless Joe still has McCann at 5 in the lineup

    Mark Montgomery FOR GODS SAKE!

    He is the real deal.

  • Naved

    Shane Greene
    Matt Daley
    Bruce Billings
    Chris Leroux
    Cesar Cabral
    Al Aceves
    Chase Whitley

All called up before Monty. This is absurd.

Four of those pitchers were DFAd following appearing for the Yankees. They needed a disposable arm at a time when there was a 40-man crunch. Sometimes there’s more to the story than what you immediately see.

      Also, are you Mongomery’s mom?

I’m looking for the part where it says he’s the “real deal.” Maybe it’s spelled out in some sort of code.

        • Michahiro Pinaka

          “wipeout slider”

    • Eric

I suspect that Montgomery will not keep up his 99% rate of runners left on base, and his > 5 BB/9 is positively terrifying.

And this is against AAA hitters.

  • RetroRob

Almonte’s arrival is probably short. Ichiro is a bit banged up, so they need an OFer for a day or so. He’ll be sent down and a pitcher eventually added, or Ichiro will go on the DL.

    • RetroRob

…and I see Beltran is now also day-to-day, hopefully that is he is only day-to-day, hence the immediate need for another OFer.

  • Brian da Ca$hman

If given a chance I can see Almonte becoming a Will Venable type of hitter.

    • The Other Matt

That wouldn’t be bad at all. I’d definitely sign up for that. The question is, will he ever get that chance, again?

  • Raza

If Jose Ramirez is on the 40 man roster, just call him up. He has legit swing and miss stuff. He hasn’t pitched much this year but the upside is real and I already trust him more in a big spot over Claiborn and Aceves.

    • vicki

is he ready? he was just activated a week ago, and has thrown only two innings for swb.

      • RetroRob

Doesn’t matter if he’s only pitched two innings in relief and was injured. He must immediately be added to the 25-man MLB roster and brought up to the majors because, well, hmmm, well, just because!

  • Robert

Con Grats and good luck to Zmont. Hope you are here to stay!!

  • Yankenstein

    Holy 2013 Batman !!

  • Yan Solo

Well, this hasn’t turned into the start to the season we were all hoping for (especially after such a promising and healthy start). I wish they never would’ve left the old stadium. I know that’s not the cause, but I’m reaching for anything right now to keep my sanity regarding this team of late. Last night’s game was atrocious. Handing lead after lead to the METS!?!

I still count a 7 man bullpen, not a 6 man, what am i missing?

    Bentances
    Robertson
    Daley
    Claiborn
    Warren
    Thorton
    Aceves

We just only have a 4 starters on the 25 at the moment, or am i wrong?

    • Michahiro Pinaka

I think they are considering Aceves for a starter role…or at least they were.

    • tom

Perhaps, Aceves is out since he is lined for a spot start this Thursday.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

Until Whitley is expected to be called, it’s technically as a 6 man as Aceves is in the bullpen.

      • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

        Rotation excuse me.

    • tom

However, it is still 7 man bullpen because if Aceves is used again then it is very good chance that Whitley will start.

  • Tom

The Yankees have a 7 man pen (DRob, Warren, Betances, Thornton, Claiborne, Aceves, Daley) and a 5 man bench.

They are short one starter, not a bullpen arm. It isn’t weird at all – they are just floating an extra position player for the next few days until Whitley is called up.

I imagine Zoilo will be sent down after tomorrow’s game or one of the day-to-day guys position guy will be DL’d if the problems persist. This seemed like the obvious and predictable move. If they don’t remove a position player after Wednesday, then they will be dealing with a 6 man pen. Right now it’s a normal strength pen (number-wise, quality is a different story)

  • The Other Matt

The inevitable breakdown of the Yankees has happened. As if Nova and Pineda injuries weren’t enough, now this. Luckily the injuries to Teixeira and Robertson earlier this season only sidelined them for a couple weeks, and the team was able to play decently in their absence. Now CC is sidelined for a couple weeks, Kelly for at least a week (on top of the games he missed already), and both Ichiro and Beltran are day to day. Though backs can be tricky and he is now forty, given Ichiro’s track record I feel a bit more optimistic on him coming back in a couple days than Beltran. I have an innately weird feeling that before the week is over the Yankees will announce they’ve put Beltran on the DL. Which is why I don’t think Zoilo’s stint will be so short, after all. Though I could be wrong, and maybe they both recover soon, or Ichiro is DL’d and Beltran returns.

What is interesting to me is that they chose to bring up Almonte over Flores. Coincidentally, I recently wondered when the inevitable injury occurred to one of the outfielders which player they would decide to call up. They had both been swinging the bat well in Scranton, but I guess Almonte’s performance when he first got called last season, and him being a switch-hitter makes him the more favorable option at the moment.

Somebody tell Cashman and Girardi this isn’t the Aceves from 2009. He was terrible the last 2 seasons. Was released by Red Sox. He has been done done done for 2 years. Get rid of him before he costs us any more games. NYY pitching is abysmal (except for Tanaka). They can’t get the lousy Mets out.
