MLBTR’s projected arbitration salaries

What Went Right: Raul Ibanez
Frankenstorm Open Thread Day II

Over at MLBTR, Matt Swartz published his projected salaries for this winter’s arbitration-eligible players. His model was accurate to within 10% for players who did not sign multi-year deals last year — including just a 5% error for the Yankees — and after a summer of tweaks and refinements, he could be even closer this year.

The Yankees have seven arbitration-eligible players to deal with this offseason — Chris Dickerson and Frankie Cervelli fell just short of qualifying — though Casey McGehee is a prime non-tender candidate. The biggest expected raise belongs to Phil Hughes, who should see his salary jump from $3.2M to $5.7M. David Robertson and Boone Logan figure to get ~$1M raises while Brett Gardner and Joba Chamberlain are in line for negligible pay increases following their injury-shortened years. Jayson Nix still projects to get a six-figure salary and could be non-tendered as well. Without McGehee, the six-man arbitration class will cost the Yankees approximately $16.7M. Not too bad at all.

Franky should see more playing time. I like the enthusiasm and energy he brings.

Random thought: is it possible that he was kept in the minors all year to cut his arb clock? Or is it just that the Yankees think he’s really bad?

      • Cuso

Not so random though: the Yankees know he’s really bad. Great attitude, bad (and fragile) player.

The concussions may not be his fault, but they still happened.

Yup, Cervelli’s career .271/.339/.353/.692 (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS)in the Majors is way worse than Stewart’s .217/.281/.302/.583…

And that’s with 139 more AB’s for Frankie too. Stewart is garbage, Cervelli is no All-Star but has shown he’s definitely a better option for the Yankees back-up spot. So he had a bad season in AAA last year, ok. Every season Stewart has had in the Majors has been bad. But for whatever reason the front office is in love with good ol’ Chris.

Frankie brings more energy, enthusiasm, and better numbers but the Yankees bury him in the minors for a loser like Stewart. I just don’t get it.

i still dont get why joba or gardner would get one

Here’s a quick comparison of old vs expected salaries. Gardner isn’t getting a raise and Joba’s is barely over $100,000. It’s not like their salaries are skyrocketing.

Well players pretty much never get less salary through arbitration. I can’t imagine they’d be much anyways.

Everyone deserves even a cost of living increase, however silly that may sound when we’re talking millionaires.
