Yankees No More: They’re the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders now
By Mike AxisaVia Donnie Collins: The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre franchise has officially changed its nickname from Yankees to RailRiders (one word). The new name and uniforms were unveiled at an event tonight. Here’s the new primary logo.
The Yankees reportedly asked their minor league affiliates to drop the “Yankees” nickname around this time last year, but so far only the Triple-A squad has obliged. Fans were able to vote for the team’s new nickname, and Collins says RailRiders easily won out over Blast, Black Diamond Bears, Porcupines, Trolley Frogs, and Fireflies. Porcupines came in second, hence their inclusion in the logo. Trolley Frogs got hosed, man.

Goddammit, really wanted Trolley Frogs. WTF is a railrider again?
Seriously!!! How did people drop the ball on this?!?
It’s what you call a woman (or man) who you can pay……on second thought that might not be what they are talking about
No.
Keep going
Dammit!
I am now ashamed for not voting for trolley frogs
I’m really upset that Trolley Frogs didn’t win.
Why’d yankees want name dropped??
Probably because the minor league teams aren’t owned by them usually and the Yankees name is extremely valuable.
Fireflies? That sounds like a junior high softball team.
Correction. 5 year old T-Ball league
They’ll always be the Black Diamond Bears to me
I can’t tell if this is a joke or not
I like the logo, the porcupine looks like a shaggy monster. So did the team colors change also?
Still navy caps and pinstripes uniforms.
The new logo is okay, I think the team is going to have to force the Florida clubs to change the name, because they probably get a lot of money down there out of the visible association with the Yankees.
I don’t think any forcing is required. The Yankees own the Tampa and GCL farm clubs. If they want the clubs to stop using the Yankees brand they will stop using the Yankees brand.
Whether or not the name they’ve chosen is a good one (undecided here) I like the idea of having a name apart from the parent club. Minor league teams should have their own identity. You can certainly market the “future Yankee stars” angle without using the team name.
so many immature jokes can come from this name, I really hope they thought this through.
though my inner 12 yr old is smiling like it’s Christmas
i’m sorry, but me too. i’m a grown, college-educated, progressive woman. but railriders is low-hanging fruit.
so to speak.
triple-A affiliate, you just cost yourself $17.99 in tshirt sales, fool. NO DICE.
You might be too late, I heard the Captain already bought out all the initial t-shirt, and hoodie shipments. He apparently said they were going to be put in some of his famous giftbaskets along with the some signed balls.
The logo isn’t bad, but I still didn’t like any of the options.
I’d like to think this as an effort by the AAA team to pick the worst name possible and embarrass the franchise so that the Yankees would let them use the name again.
This is just mind numbingly bad. What an awful name.
The electrocuted rabid skunk in the logo needs to go.
That’s hysterical.
I thought it was a flaming lizard…
The logo/name continue to grow on me.
RailRiders… more like the I-80 riders, amirite??
Name and logo are blah, hoo-hum but at least better than Yankees. Too conservative, Porcupines would have been great.
