- On the road in Cleveland, the Yankees opened their four game set against the Tribe with a win thanks to a late homer by Curtis Granderson. A rookie shut the Yanks down on Tuesday, but they won big the next day in a blowout. Dustin Moseley, the team’s newest fifth starter, was strong in a another blowout win on Thursday.
- The Yanks followed that up by heading to Tampa for the then-biggest series of the year, but they dropped the opener when Phil Hughes made one bad pitch. Robbie Cano powered the Yanks to a win with a late homer on Saturday, but the bats went silent yesterday.
- The trade deadline came a went, and the Yanks made a trio of moves. On Friday they acquired Lance Berkman and cash from the Astros for minors leaguers Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes, then they picked up Austin Kearns from Cleveland for a player to be named later. An hour before the deadline the Yanks added Kerry Wood in exchange for cash and a player to be named later.
- In the wake of all the new pickups, Chan Ho Park was designated for assignment after the team tried to trade him. Juan Miranda and Colin Curtis were also sent to the minors.
- Injury Zone: Nick Johnson has resumed baseball activities. Andy Pettitte is feeling good following his groin strain and threw off a half-mound yesterday.
- Joba Chamberlain lost his 8th inning setup job, but he is not in danger of being sent to the minors.
