rather have bartolo than ayala
I still would like to see Chavez DH against Verlander and Scherzer. Posada I have a little bit more faith in against Fister and Porcello.
Posada is .333 against Verlander according to bref. And he’s got more PA against him.
Most of those ABs were from when Posada was a beastly hitter.
i wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see Chavez at 3B and Alex at DH.
Colon wouldn’t have pitched anyway. Ayala probably won’t pitch at all except in a blow out. Even Burnett and Hughes are ahead of Ayala. Next series when we need a 4th starter I think we’ll see Colon either in the pen as AJ gets the start or Colon gets the start and AJ stays in the pen. Posada will be pinch run for at some point so we can still play matchups at DH with Montero, Jones, and Chavez.
I have a feeling Burnett and Hughes are there to caddy for Ivan and Freddy.
i think that is why theyre there. the shutdown guys the yanks will go to in a close game are sori, robby, and mo (obviously). i imagine the yanks plan to use aj/hughes for when the starters dont go 6 or if the game goes into extras.
i would so much rather have bartolo on the roster than a few of these pitchers. what the hell man
i dont get it either. ayala is who i dont understand. he strikes out less guys, walks more, and his career splits are a lot more drastic than barts. not to mention bart is stretched out and can go multiple innings (though we already have a long guy in burnett). the only thing i see is that ayala gives a slight uptick in grounders. to me its not nearly enough to outweigh the positives colon gives.
the yanks probably know something we dont is my guess.
The Tigers are a good fastball-hitting team, and that’s really all Bartolo throws at anyone (at least, when he’s pitching effectively). It makes sense to leave Bartolo off the roster and have him rest up for the later rounds, when his stuff might be more effective (and matchup better) against other teams.
good point. we do have a lot of velo guys already in the pen. wade is really the only other offspeed guy.
so are we to assume bartolo will be throwing in tampa during the series?
Because the Colon of the last 6 weeks of the season got knocked much harder than the Ayala of the last 6 weeks, and that includes the 8th inning meltdown/beatdown on Wednesday.
Sad day for Bart. Thanks for he great unexpected year Bart.
Maybe the heater returns and you get added to the Rays or Rangers series in the next round.
AJ should have been the pitcher “Zito’ed” as you added much more value in far fewer chances and haven’t been a whiner.
A whiner?
You just throwing that out there because that’s how you feel?
AJ may have shit the bed often, but I don’t recall him whining ever.
No? He whined like a beat puppy after getting removed from a game in the midst of (yet another) meltdown. I believe it was his second to last start. I guess you missed that.
“No? He whined like a beat puppy after getting removed from a game in the midst of (yet another) meltdown. I believe it was his second to last start. I guess you missed that.”
Well, I wouldn’t want a guy on the team who is happy about sucking so bad, his manager had to yank him early. He’s had a shitty last 2 years, but I don’t recall him whining about it to the media or anything like that.
He did, he said he wasn’t given the chance to get out of the jam after completely falling apart against a very weak team. There was a bunch of comments on this after it was reported, but I’m not the search-engine your lookinf for, YOYO.
The dude is a waste of booze & ink.
Really? One complaint, and now he is a lifetime whiner?
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing AJ out of the bullpen. He’s generally been effective in early innings and he might be good in his role. I’m hoping that, as the young kids come up to create a first-class staff, AJ can fill a useful role as a grossly overpaid but effective reliever.
Pretty much exactly as I had wanted, except for A.J. I would have much rather seen Bartolo in that spot despite his recent struggles. I mean, Colon’s ERA and FIP are both more that a full run better than Burnett’s. O well, Burnett probably won’t be in a position to hold down a close game at any point anyway, so it shouldn’t really matter.
I like it. I’m just wondering who they’ll use as the long man IF one of the starters blows up.
AJ. He’s the most logically stretched out. Hughes had one appearance and has basically done nothing in the last 20 days. AJ is higher in the pecking order right now whether we like it or not.
So Noesi who worked his butt off, pitched in all the crappy assignments, gets screwed out of his roster spot. And having Posada on the roster is just wrong.
To be fair, Posada is still hitting righties to a wOBA over .350, so he is plenty useful as a platoon DH with Montero. I could have seen Noesi over Ayala maybe, but I definitely understand it as Ayala has pitched to a ~2.00 ERA. Lucky? Definitely, but good nonetheless.
Perhaps Noesi could have replaced Hughes or A.J. But Hughes has better stuff (working a few innings at a time) and A.J. is more stretched out, so I have no problem with it.
To add, the playoff roster is not about rewarding players for their performance, it’s about putting out the players that will best serve the team in a short series.
Anyone know how Montero’s hand it? I’ve missed the report if there was any bruising, etc.
Yesterday:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb
“He’s okay. I saw him today. He’s fine. He got hit on the outside of the last two fingers. He’ll have a bruise, but I saw it. There wasn’t really any swelling. He’s okay.”
Great info. Thanks
Unfortunately, It doesnt look like Montero is going to get many at bats in this series, with no lefties starting. Also, who would he pinch hit for? Posada and maybe Gardner is about it, so at best, he gets a handful of at bats. If the Yankees make it to the next round, hopefully he plays a bigger role.
The roster worked out the way I expected.
You have Hughes, Ayala, Burnett for blowout/injury/extra inning purposes. That leaves CoBoSoRoMo for the big assignments.
I’m also glad they took Posada over Romine. If something unfortunate were to happen to Russell, Posada/Montero could catch a few innings. (I still don’t get the “Montero can’t catch” crap).
Andruw Jones isn’t gonna get any Ab’s, unless Leyland brings in Coke to face Gardner.
Am I the only one who is genuinely surprised that Girardi didn’t decide they needed a “real” backup catcher and bring Romine?
Come on why is Ayala on the roster and not colon
