River Ave. Blues ยป Kevin Cash

With Posada activated, Cash out

May 29, 2009 by Benjamin Kabak 26 Comments

Interesting roster move by the Yanks this afternoon: When they activated catcher Jorge Posada from the 15-day disabled list, they designated Kevin Cash for assignment. Francisco Cervelli will remain with the club as the backup catcher until Jose Molina returns from his leg injury. As Posada is both 37 and coming off of a quick recovery period for a hamstring pull, Cervelli should see his fair share of innings behind the dish.

I am intrigued by this move mostly because the Yanks didn’t have to make it right now. Since Posada was already on the 40-man roster, the Yanks didn’t have to DFA Kevin Cash. The Yanks probably like Cervelli’s defense more than Cash’s, and I would agree there. Anyway, Cash will probably just wind up back in AAA soon enough, and that’s that.

Update: For posterity’s sake, Kevin Cash was not DFA’d. He actually had an option left. The Yankees optioned him down to AAA. He will remain with the organization. Works for me.

First round of Friday roster moves

May 8, 2009 by Joe Pawlikowski 112 Comments

We expected the Yankees to make a number of roster moves today, and via RotoWorld we find the first of them (you might have to scroll down, depending on when you see this). On the ledger now: Melancon down, Molina disabled, Cash up. With two players removed from the 25-man roster, that leaves one for A-Rod. However, purchasing Kevin Cash’s requires a 40-man roster move. That will more than likely be the DFAing of Angel Berroa, which would open up yet another 25-man spot. Here’s to hoping that Juan Miranda gets the call to deepen the bench a bit. He’d be valuable as a PH with two backup catchers on the roster.

Yanks continue to steal players from Boston

December 24, 2008 by Benjamin Kabak 33 Comments

A few hours after stealing a big fish away from Boston, the Yanks nabbed themselves a little fish too. MLB Trade Rumors points to a Joel Sherman report noting that the Yanks signed Kevin Cash to a Minor League deal worth around $700,000. Cash will play the role of Chad Moeller next season, serving as the AAA catcher and third-string Major League catcher in case Jorge Posada or Jose Molina goes down. Unlike Mark Teixeira, though, Kevin Cash isn’t very good, and Boston won’t really miss this one.
