We are now just one day away from the 2015 non-waiver trade deadline. The Yankees have not yet made a move but I expect them to do something by 4pm ET tomorrow. They need pitching — I’m not sure how much more obvious it could be at this point — and a new second baseman sure would be cool too. Don’t be fooled by the six-game lead in the AL East, there are holes on the roster.

Late last night, Cole Hamels was traded to the Rangers in an eight-player deal, taking arguably the best available pitcher off the board. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we learned the Tigers are making David Price and their other rental players available, which is significant because Price would look wonderful in pinstripes. We’ll again keep track of the day’s Yankees-related rumors right here. Talk about all of ’em in this open thread.

  • 2:50pm ET: Not only do the Yankees not want to trade top prospects, they are hesitant to trade guys like Adam Warren and Bryan Mitchell as well. The sense is they will add a reliever to deepen the bullpen. Warren could then be a candidate to return to the rotation. [Joel Sherman]
  • 2:47pm ET: The Mariners plan to keep impending free agent Hisashi Iwakuma. He’s a favorite of ownership and they could always re-sign him in the offseason. The Yankees had not been connected to Iwakuma but he seemed like a logical fit. (Masahiro Tanaka‘s teammate in Japan!) [Jeff Passan]
  • 2:23pm ET: The Yankees are “poised to strike” and are in on all the available arms. That … really doesn’t tell us anything new. The Yankees are typically a club that waits until the last minute to make trades, however. The Martin Prado and Stephen Drew deals were announced after the deadline last year.[Ken Rosenthal]
  • 2:01pm ET: The Yankees are on the “periphery” of the Yovani Gallardo race. He is very available and a bunch of teams are in the mix. Gallardo is still scheduled to start against the Yankees tonight. [Heyman]
  • 12:50pm ET: David Price is heading to the Blue Jays for a package of top prospects, including Daniel Norris and Anthony Alford. So scratch him off the list.
  • 12:06pm ET: The Blue Jays appear to be “closing in” on a trade for David Price according to multiple reports. Toronto hasn’t been to the postseason since 1993 and they acquired Troy Tulowitzki a few days ago. The chips are firmly in the middle of the table.
  • 10:07am ET: The Yankees are considering among Mike Leake‘s most likely landing spots at this point. They’re also a candidate to acquire Jeff Samardzija should the surging White Sox decide to move him. Special assistant Jim Hendry drafted the righty when he was Cubs GM and Larry Rothschild was Samardzija’s pitching coach in Chicago for a few years. [Heyman]
  • 9:30am ET: The Yankees are one of four serious contenders for David Price, along with the Dodgers, Giants, and Blue Jays. All four clubs are in talks with the Tigers. [Jon Heyman]
  • The Yankees discussed Dustin Ackley with the Mariners. Ramon Flores and Ben Gamel came up but Seattle wanted more — I believe it was Flores or Gamel, not both — so talks stalled out. For whatever reason the Yankees have been after Ackley for years. [Mark Feinsand]

Reminder: Your trade proposal sucks.

Yankees bats not as explosive against Colby Lewis in a 5-2 loss to the Rangers
Yankees wouldn't have to sacrifice the future for David Price, just part of it
  • Duzzi24

Seriously, why would the Yankees want Ackley? Just because he was drafted high at one point? He has been a god awful regular and Flores is probably better than him right now. I really hope Cashman can pull off a deal for Price. I don’t see any of other options except maybe Samardzjia that would be big upgrades.

    • Dan A.

Position versatility and upside? They may think a change of scenery (and as a lefty to Yankee Stadium) can unlock his potential. Plus he’s greatly improved over the past two months.

      • yclept

Not sure why Cashman would want some light hitting project for SHANE FREAKIN GREEENE! Morons.

      • Duzzi24

He is hitting 216 with a 635 OPs…don’t we have enough of those players? Plus he is no where near Drew or Ryan on a defensive level. Just seems like a waste of a roster spot at this point. The Yankees should be trying to acquire difference makers at this point. Ackley doesn’t help us in the playoffs or do anything for a World Series push.

    • IVoted4Kodos

Plays multiple spots and they may see him as a change of scenery guy. Probably their scouts see something they think they can work with.

  • Chip

As Mike said last night – I think the Yankees only want Ackley to make RAB fans appreciate Stephen Drew more.

  • Chip

Maybe Ackley and Iwakuma for Flores, Gamel and Rookie?

    • calripyankee

      I think I’d do that..

    • Stan

      I am for that

  • Chip

    Putting things together on twitter…

Sounds like Detroit will get Wood and Urias (and possibly more)
    Dodgers get Price

    • blake

I’d be shocked if they trade Urias for Price

      • Chip

        Bob NightengaleVerified account?@BNightengale
MLB executives are absolutely convinced #Tigers David Price will wind up with the #Dodgers, who likely will have to part with Urias.

Jon Heyman ?@JonHeymanCBS 13m13 minutes ago Manhattan, NY
there’s some thought dodgers are about to add alex wood as ammunition to get the big target david price

        • blake

          Nightengake is dumb though

    • Blevins71

If I’m the Tigers I can’t say ‘Yes’ to that deal fast enough

  • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread
  • blake

    Ackles is worse than Drew

  • Rick

I don’t mind Ackley as a backup, but in no way is he an upgrade at any position.

  • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

Ackley is a deal I can easily see the F.O making this offseason.

    • calripyankee

      Hope not..

  • blake

SD seems to be the best trade partner because they have stuff we could use and because they have a young dumb GM who just likes to makes deals to make deals

    • Captain Sensible

Wil Meyers in CF…in that ball park? That’s like me managing a video game roster.

  • blake

@keithlaw: No way I give up Urias for any rental, even one as good as Price. https://t.co/h4FSEbCoPD

    • Chip

I don’t disagree with him, but Friedman knows Price and believes once they get him in LA he ain’t leaving.

      • blake

Wait 3 months and have Price and Urias both…..that’s a Friedman move

        • Chip

Except the reality is that he’s got an older roster and an owner who wants to win now.

It’s a very different animal than what was expected of him in Tampa.

          • blake

They can win now with Kershaw and Greinke now

            • Chip

They will improve their odds greatly by adding David Price.

            • Robinson Tilapia

The Dodgers love to put extra frosting on their cake. The problem is that the cake winds up being dropped on the floor before eating anyway.

              • Puppet

Or the cake collapses under the weight of the frosting

                • Robinson Tilapia

And it’s not even my personal favorite, cream cheese frosting.

                  • Puppet

                    *nods* you’re alright Tilapia

    • Rick

And then to put the newly acquired Wood in on top of it. He’s a good looking young lefty with a ton of years of control left.

  • Nick Bartolone

If the yanks can get Price without giving up Severino…that would be one sick rotation of Price, Tanaka, Pineda, Severino and Nasty Nate
If Price doesn’t work out, I’d expect them to pursue James Shields knowing he can compete in the AL East and is a known competitor. That’s just one hefty contract

  • Rick

I was pissed the Dodgers snagged Peraza last night … just snuck that in the trade

    • blake

Yea I don’t get that for the Braves ….I think they could have gotten more just trading him by himself

      • Rick

Same with me. Braves seem to give up a ton to not get a whole lot back … I mean Olivera, really?

        • blake

It would be different if anybody had any clue how good he is…..he’s a 30 year old prospect

          • Rick

            Exactly! Couldn’t agree more.

      • MB923

Braves got hosed. All they got back was a couple of low level prospects and a guy who is 30 with injury concern. Give up Alex Wood and Peraza and Jim Johnson ?

Dodgers made out of that like bandits.

  • Pkyankfan69

Still feeling Kume and Kimbrel before the deadline… Sounds like a bad sitcom

  • Matt

Nova, Mateo, And Refsnyder for Price and Kinsler provided the Yankees can negotiate an extension with Price. I think Kinsler could work, but his front loaded contract might convince Detroit to want to hold onto him.

    • Rick

If the Dodgers are willing to part with Urias, don’t even brother coming up with a Yankees package.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Exactly. Urias + Peraza = Game Over.

        • Sir Didi Nakamura

No way they do that, right? That’s way too much imo

          • Robinson Tilapia

Like, Peraza doesn’t even need to leave the airport. They won’t miss him. He’s Luke Ridenour.

            • Rick

              Lol poor Ridnour

        • blake

That would be crazy though ….if they want to do that….fine

      • blake

        I highly doubt they are

      • Bo Knows

Urias isn’t going anywhere. Dodgers appear to be pretty good at keeping their untouchables while getting what they want.

    • blake

      I’d do it….doubt it’s enough for Detroit

  • blake

    Blockbuster my trade sucks proposal:

Padres get: Jorge Mateo, Greg Bird, and Adam Warren
Yankees get: Justin Upton, Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel.

    • Rick

      Sign me up twice.

    • magikfantasy

      where does upton play?

      • blake

        RF ….

        • Sir Didi Nakamura

Well now you’ve got Beltran as the 4th OF in that situation.

          • mitch

i see that as a problem for Beltran and nobody else

          • blake

I want to win baby…..Carlos can go cry with Wilmer

      • Rick

You see that statue of Beltran we’ve been placing out in RF every game?

        • magikfantasy

if girardi keeps CC in the rotation, theres no way he puts beltran on the bench especially since they got him for his postseason experience alone

          • Rick

I’m not sure why one has anything to do with the other.

            • Robinson Tilapia

All people of color over 35 look the same.

            • Tom_hamsandwich

They have nothing to do with the other, but Beltran is staying in RF. I think that is a forgone conclusion.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Initially, I said “no.” It looks better the more I stare at it.

      • blake

        Keep staring

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Boooooooobies.

    • calripyankee

For 2 months of J Upton???

    • Tom_hamsandwich

Its not the worst thing I’ve seen, in fact I do like it, but the Yankees have a logjam and unless they are getting rid of one of their starting outfielders, I don’t see them taking a new one.

    • Chip

If AJ Preller didn’t already deserve to be fired then this would seal the deal :-)

    • Captain Sensible

I can hear the Pads GM laughing at that proposal from here

      • Sir Didi Nakamura

Why is he laughing after his dreadful offseason?

        • Captain Sensible

He put Wil Meyers in CF, he must be maniacal

        • IVoted4Kodos

          He might never laugh again.

      • blake

They already asked for Mateo….so they’d be losing a rental….a closer who’s salary they’d like to move anyway….and Ross….getting back 2 good prospects and a starter that can go right in the rotation. It might be light or not even a match….but I don’t think it’s that far off value for value speaking

        • Sir Didi Nakamura

I’d love to get Tyson, I’d do Mateo or Bird for him anyway.

        • Captain Sensible

Why do the yankees need a third closer? Where does Beltran go? Tyson Ross….meh.

          • Sir Didi Nakamura

Ross is great, would be our best starter statistically wise this season if he joined the rotation.

          • blake

Super pen…..who cares….he’s an upgrade and controlled

  • Sir Didi Nakamura

    I want Price!

    • Y’s Guy

c’mon now, what are you giving up for him?

      • Sir Didi Nakamura

I’d honestly think hard about Severino. I’d offer Mateo/Sanchez though first.

        • Y’s Guy

If he was off the table for Hamels, why would he be on the table for Price?

          • Sam Palazzo

Yankees have been after Price for years

            • Y’s Guy

yeah fine, but this doesn’t answer the question.

  • D$

  • Rick

So kind of a funny non-Yankee story. I’m out with an attorney grabbing coffee this morning and he’s telling me about one of his partner’s sons. The son is Rob Kaminsky of the St. Louis Cards organization. By the time I get back to my office, the son is packaged in a trade for Brandon Moss. Strange how things happen in this world.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Avoid Luis Severino and Aaron Judge’s dad’s partners, Rick.

      • Sir Didi Nakamura

Rick seriously, don’t ruin this for us.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Kaminsky’s a Jersey kid, though, right?

Do you know Mike Trout’s dad’s partner?

          • Rick

Kaminsky is a jersey kid, correct.

            • Robinson Tilapia

Goes to also show how what we do outside of here matters. If I’m talking to someone’s parents, you probably may not want them on the Yankees, at least not for a while.

    • D$

When’s the last time you talked to Brendan Ryan’s dad? I’m thinking coffee might be warranted.

      • Rick

        Well played

      • Still Stucky

        Brendan .840 OPS Ryan?

Yankees fans don’t know how to take yes for an answer.

        • D$

This is not a performance that should be believed in.

          • Still Stucky

Of course not, but if Girardi is now serious about a Drew platoon, I suspect you may see Refsnyder sometime after the deadline.

      • Sir Didi Nakamura

        He’s raking

  • Rick

What do you think Friedman was like on the phone with Braves and Marlins last night? Wait, wait, I get Peraza, Wood, Jim Johnson and THE Cat for this Olivera fellow?

  • MB923
    • Robinson Tilapia

So how the hell do I get home from Detroit?

      Love,
      Jose Peraza

  • Austinmac

The Dodgers can evidently easily beat any proposal we make if we don’t include our best four prospects. I have little doubt they or someone else will get him. I say focus on other starters before they too get dealt elsewhere.

  • blake

It’s possible the Dodgers wanted Peraza to play 2b next year too

  • mitch

i won’t be too disappointed if the Yanks don’t make a big move, but it’s definitely annoying to see the Dodgers clearly pass them in the use of financial leverage department

    • Still Stucky

It’ll be more disappointing when they pass them in the standings.

    • Basil

Yep. Times have changed–and the balance of power too.

    • dickylarue

What’s funny is that the Yankees have chosen to stop using financial leverage. It’s not that other teams passed them. They just conceded while they have Arod, CC and Tex on the payroll. When those 3 are off, they’ll spend like drunken sailors again.

  • magikfantasy

If the yanks can land both price & kinsler as well as resign price, severino should be discussed especially after his great start yesterday, trade value is at an absolute high

    • Robinson Tilapia

Except there’s very little chance you find out if you can re-sign Price until November or December.

    • IVoted4Kodos

Do people really think that one start moves the needle on a player that much? It’s like looking at 4 ABs for a hitter.

      • Robinson Tilapia

They’re skipping over the regular season and only thinking post-season.

        • magikfantasy

thats the only real problem though with this team, they have to play .500 ball the rest of the way to 90 wins to likely take the division, team lacks a true ace to match up against though against guys like volquez, martinez, scherzer, kershaw

          • Robinson Tilapia

Ignoring the rest, you don’t believe the Yankees can play .500 ball the rest of the way right now?

See…..this is what I don’t get. People suggesting these big moves appear to be people really lacking in confidence with this team at all. One move isn’t making your confidence improve much.

            • magikfantasy

no i meant getting to the postseason is almost certain with this current team, competing in the postseason is gonna be hard without a true ace. Definitely but seems like a long shot. price, tanaka, pineda is much more frightening than tanaka, pineda, CC (i say CC since hes the postseason veteran & would likely get the start)

              • Robinson Tilapia

I think we accentuate the inconsistent starts too much, without looking at the good, when we do that.

Look, this goes against my style, but I was always for adding another solid starter to this mix, even last off-season. They are rolling with risk here. Inconsistency and all, the risk has gone well for them thus far.

Rolling the dice and, yes, hoping Tanaka and Pineda get back to consistency for the potential postseason, as well as hoping Eovaldi (who I frankly think gets that game 3), is an option that carries risk as well.

My question continues to be how much of the future are you willing to pay to help mitigate that risk right now, and whether the tipping point they’ve established is a fair one.

            • dickylarue

I think .500 is very doable with this bullpen & the way this offense is playing. That said, I see the rotation slipping. It’s been happening gradually instead of all at once so people aren’t panicking yet. That said, if Pineda and Tanaka can’t pitch like #1’s, the team will be fortunate to hover around .500 the rest of the way with CC going every 5th day.

      • jjyank

Agreed with your premise, but one start for a pitcher is a significantly larger percent of their respective season than 4 ABs is for a hitter. Something like 3% of a pitcher’s season vs. less than 1% of a hitter’s season.

That said, yeah, one start doesn’t change the talent evaluation of other teams, unless his elbow explodes in that start or something.

      • dickylarue

I think theoretically trading Price/Hamels/Cueto for CC is a huge upgrade that gives us innings and keeps the bullpen fresh.

  • John in Forest

I guess this is the minor issue, but — if the Yanks do acquire Price or another top starter, who gets bumped out of the rotation? Yes, it will be great to have a true #1, but if the team bumps #2 to the bullpen instead of #6 (_again_, he typed bitterly), is that really much improvement?

    • Robinson Tilapia

It’d be one of Nova, Eo, or CC, obviously. I doubt it’ll be Eo.

      • mitch

        i think they’d go 6 man for a while

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Possibly. Sure.

        • SoooPitted

they could.. but losing Nova gets us back to a 5 man rotation.. and of course, when we get to the playoffs… are we gonna go to a 4 man rotation? no way you can give CC a start in the playoffs… no way

    • magikfantasy

nova is likely part of any deal for a starter now

    • Tyler

Nova could be in the trade which would open up a spot.

    • Stevie Sacs

the rumored offer is Nova and Sanchez. Maybe they would need to throw in a severino to put it over the top.

      • Rick

        Link?

        • Stevie Sacs

I read it in ny daily news today

          • Robinson Tilapia

Might want to check if the Post agrees.

          • Rick

            Thanks, sir

      • Aldukes

        won’t be enough IMO.

      • mitch

        i wouldn’t consider Severino a throw in

        • Stevie Sacs

Neither do I, I just meant he would need to be added perhaps

          • mitch

yeah I agree with that. If DET would take Nova + Sanchez i think the deal would have been done by now

            • Stevie Sacs

not necessarily, detroit might still be fleshing out the market for price. they didn’t officially decide to put him on the block until late

            • Spaceman Spiff

Or they are just waiting to see if anyone tops it.

      • magikfantasy

that was before the dodgers said they’d use urias, now theres no way you get the deal done without severino+

        • Stevie Sacs

Honestly with Severino’s throwing motion concerns I’d put him the deal. For Price, hell yes.

          • SoooPitted

what are the throwing concerns? i wasnt aware of em

            • Stevie Sacs

Violent unorthodox throwing motion, with many scouts believing he’s likely to get hurt.

              • SoooPitted

                ah gotcha

            • magikfantasy

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fj5VucE9d0
heres an example, he seems to throw a bit erratic, much more like a reliever, his small frame is also a bit of a concern

              • dickylarue

His frame looks bigger than advertised to me to be honest. But yeah, if someone taught that kid to drive with his legs he might throw 99 all the time with ease.

    • NH Yankee fan

Pineda at some point will be on an innings limit.. He’s already exceeded from last years total.. Probably a 6 man. Tanaka could use the rest and CC just can’t be trusted!

      • TheEvilUmpire

I’d trust CC to watch my kid. Actually I’d bet he’s a fun babysitter!

    • Diego Moreddardno

It’d better be CC. CC is currently the 7th best starter on the 25 man. Warren and Diego are both better but relegated to bullpen duties.

    • joeman

don’t think joe would bump CC

  • Robinson Tilapia

I think I might start trolling the site with pictures of Phoebe Price, and asking for trade proposals, by about noon today.

    • joeman

won’t be around…got to pack for vacation

    • Coolerking101

A good start, but if you’re going to trade for a Phoebe, I’d vote for 80’s Phoebe Cates.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Always the smarter move.

  • CashmanNinja

I find it funny how the Mariners asked for so much in return for Ackley. I get Flores of Gamel, but both? Let’s not act like Ackley is a stud 2B. We don’t even know how he’ll be at 2B anymore considering he’s been hidden in the OF a lot. I just think the Mariners are overvaluing him a ton.

  • Basil

Which of those 4 teams are willing to allow Price to keep that not-flattering beard?

  • Aldukes

I rather go after Ross and Kimbrel.. might have a better shot at not giving up Severino?

  • craig

The Dodger and Hamels deals made my head hurt. Does anyone have any insight into who did well or if someone overpaid?

    • TheEvilUmpire

It’ll take years for a final verdict on those deals. Dodgers ultimately fail if there isn’t a flag flying at the end of October.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Marlins and Braves have to had been reaaaaaaally drunk last night, if this is even official yet.

      Still ambivalent on Hamels.

      • craig

In Hamels, it seemed like the Phillies got quantity and some quality.

The Dodgers deal just had so many moving parts and cash moving around.

        • Robinson Tilapia

I just fail to understand what anyone, other than the Dodgers, got back here.

          • craig

Latos and a couple of injured minor league guys…I think that’s what they got. Seems like a lot of stuff moving around for Latos. Maybe it was needed to get Cat Latos in the deal, too.

      • dickylarue

The Dodger trade reminds me of when my friends and I would dump all our baseball cards in a pile and just pick.

    • Beauee

I was not the biggest fan of the Phillies return in the Hamels deal. Yes, they got a lot back, but it seemed like it was quantity over quality. My biggest concern with Alfaro/Williams is their lack of plate discipline. Alfaro looks like a sure-fire bust, and I am not convinced that Williams lower K level this year means he has finally figured it out. As for Thompson, he has some good offerings, but seems to be better suited for the pen.

  • blake

@JeffPassan: Hard to fathom a scenario in which Dodgers give up Julio Urias in any deal. He’s 18, at AA, LHP up to 98. You don’t trade that for a rental.

    Passan >>>> Nightengale

    • Robinson Tilapia

      George King >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Nah, I can’t.

    • dickylarue

The Yankees can get the Dodgers to give up Urias if they put Severino in the package.

  • Spaceman Spiff

What gets it done for Price? Nova, Sanchez, Flores, Jose Ramirez, Lail?

    • Andy

prob can’t do it without severino

      • TheEvilUmpire

Severino and a guy in the 10-20 prospect range, maybe an unranked throw-in?

      • Andrew_Jackson_Pollock

Agreed. If they’re not including Judge or Severino, I would be shocked if they can get it done.

      • Bo Knows

way too much for a rental

        • Andy

not saying I want to do it, just saying that’s what it will take

    • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

24 combined Years Of Team Control 2 months …
      Sure why not.

      • dickylarue

Or as I see it, an SP 1 year from free agency, a blocked catching prospect, a 4th OF, a fringe righty reliever and another pitching prospect.

  • Andy

On another note, I love the double play combo of Altuve and Correa

  • Bertin Lefkovic

I’d like to swap Garrett Jones with the Dodgers for Mike Morse, but the Dodgers don’t need Jones any less or more than they need Morse. Is there a 3rd team that would fit this deal? Tigers?

    • TheEvilUmpire

If tigers are rebooting, then they don’t want jones.

    • craig

Garret Jones, Diego Moreno, Rumbelow, Caleb Cotham, Drew, Gardner, Severino, Sanchez and Giambi’s golden thong for Morse and that Kershaw guy.

Is that how you do it?

  • dave_in_gainesville

I’m not a regular and I mean no offense, but why are we seriously considering givving away the cream of our future for any of these guys? We’ve overperformed by slapping around a weak division and getting really lucky w/some aging vets — why not be happy w/a playoff berth and come back even stronger next year? Especially since in a month we can put all of our trade chips on *our* team, instead of on someone else’s.

    • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

Because flags fly forever and stuff.

Edit: … I agree with everything you wrote , that being said I sincerely believe most if not all the heavy lifting will be done this offseason.

      • Bo Knows

Mediocrity doesn’t last that long, but it can take a while to dig out of. And it hurts a lot longer than the afterglow of a WS win

        • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

          Exactly.

That’s why I believe the whole flags fly forever narrative just doesn’t hold as much weight as it used to.

      • craig

Flags may fly forever, but that hasn’t stopped a lot of people from bashing CC’s deal and knocking the AJ Burnett deal and the Tex deal before this year.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

People are going to bash no matter what happens.

    • TripleShortOfACycle

How would we come back stronger next year when you say we over performed this year?

    • blake

Well one reason is because some of the “over performing vets” can’t be expected to do the same next year…..so they should go for it a bit.

If Arod and Tex go back to their recent norms next season……that’s a huge huge loss

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Florida? Leonardo’s Pizza. Yum.

I’m not saying I 100% agree with you, but I’d rather follow your line of thinking than going into pure desperation mode.

      • Andy

but why isn’t our GM getting Bryce for Ben Gamel? cashmen sux

      • Rick

The only problem with that line of thinking is that if you’re acknowledging that we’re lucky to get this type of performance for Tex & A-Rod – arguably our two biggest run producers – then how can you expect to truly compete next year?

        • Robinson Tilapia

That’s where I certainly deviate from him, though. This isn’t pure luck. It’s health as well. The stars are aligning in a certain way, which I don’t think I’m willing to set as expectation for the vets every season.

How does this affect the future? I don’t think the future relies on them as much as 2015 does.

        • dickylarue

This is part of my urgency for getting an Ace this deadline. We could easily have no middle of the order next season, so we may as well go for it while we currently have one.

    • Pkyankfan69

“why not be happy w/a playoff berth and come back even stronger next year?”

Who knows if this team will come back stronger next year, especially with the unexpectedly awesome performances by Tex and Arod… That and I really don’t hear too many people wanted to unload all our top guys.

      • Bo Knows

That’s why they should incorporate the prospects, sending the best who are also the closest prospects to the majors away for a rental, hurts next season, and the years after that. So when Arod and Teix revert to pumpkins this team is fucked because they’d once again have no replacements, little youth, and be stuck again tying themselves to shitty contracts to older players

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Not sure they’re any stronger next year.
Can’t expect Tex and ARod to repeat.
CC another year older. Pineda/Tanaka still health/durability concerns.
Beltran, Ells, Gardner, Headley, McCann all another year further along the wrong side of the aging curve.
Rookies rarely big impact in first exposure.

  • Since ’72

I keep seeing Seriveno being included in a Price rental. Why not just go to the 6 man rotation with Seriveno being that guy? Price would be great but will we even be able (willing) to sign him for what it takes after the season? At that point, the Yanks had better win it all this year because they will have spent a big chip on a rental.

    • Rick

If we can trade Seriveno, we gotta do it. Pull the fast one.

    • Diego Moreddardno

Yes, this is what I’ve been saying. Instead of dealing Severino, just call him up and get a great pitcher for free.

      • Jim Piasecki

He doesnt have the innings left. I wouldnt trade him for 2 months of Price either

    • Stevie Sacs

Price is worth it. Yanks would maybe need to shuffle some other pieces if saving money really is that much of a concern. But even if just for rental I think it’s worth it. Severino from what I’ve been reading a lot of people see him ultimately becoming a reliever because there are concerns about his delivery and the long term effect it could maybe have on him as a starter.

      • IVoted4Kodos

        Shuffle some other pieces?

        • Since ’72

There are no pieces to shuffle. The payroll only comes down when guys like Tex, Arod and CC come off the books. Stevie Sacs brings up a good point. If the Yanks are concerned about his delivery and longevity as a starter, and they will be willing to fork out the necessary money to re sign Price, then including him in a deal will be worth it. Having no intention of re signing Price makes it a very large gamble for a WS win this Oct.

  • Reggie C.

This is David price. This is the about winning the AL pennant and then beating the natinals in the World Series.

You try to keep Aaron Judge. But Severino, Sanchez, & Bird should be on the table. Two of those three would have to go for sure.

    • SoooPitted

yea because between those 4 prospects, at least half wont pan out

    • blake

The Nationals in the WS …lol

      • Rick

That team is getting healthy … I expect a monster August/September run.

        • blake

They always choke …until proven otherwise they’ll lose to either the Giants or Cards like clockwork

      • Y’s Guy

Are you sure they’re going to beat the Mets? I’m not. Lets see what happens this w/e. Big Series!

    • IVoted4Kodos

Giving up a ton to get Price guarantees nothing other than that you now have much less young talent than before.

      • Reggie C.

I hear you but there are no guaranteed returns on any investment. At least we know what we’re getting from Price ROS. He improves our chances at the pennant.

        • IVoted4Kodos

Not by a whole hell of a lot though. And after two months, you’ve likely got nothing to show for it. Giving up lots of talent for a rental rarely works out well.

  • joeman

why does Price have to be a rental

    • blake

      Because of Hal and this

      • craig

        Haha…that is awesome!!!

The 24 window deals are very rare and almost never happen at the deadline.

        • blake

Price isn’t signing an extension anyway…..

          • craig

            Yup…there’s that too.

I don;t blame him. He’s great and deserves his big payday.

          • joeman

well if he’s just a rental then let someone else trade for him

    • SoooPitted

well he doesn’t HAVE TO.. just theres an obvious risk that he may not resign a contract at the end of the year

    • Puppet

because he’s being chased by big market teams and, since he’s so close, would be a little nuts not to test free agency.

    • Tyler

I’d think he gets a Scherzer type deal and I really don’t want the Yankees to sign him to a 7-8 year deal. Just don’t see the back end of that deal working out well at all. The AAV wouldn’t be the problem. It would be having a lefthanded 35 year old pitcher with declining velocity, shaky location and 2 years left on the deal. Sounds familiar.

    • D$

I mean, I’d love to have Price resign, but how many $200MM pitchers do we want on the roster? (CCs not quite 200, and Tanaka is just shy if you include the posting fee).

He’s about to be 30, we’ll be talking another CC situation in 4 years.

      • mitch

I want 5, but realistically they’re probably due for another big pitcher contract. CC will be gone soon.

    • MoneyFloatsMyBoat

      Because Tanakas surgery

    • Y’s Guy

How much do you really think Price is going to give the Yankees as a discount because he liked pitching for them for 2 months? I’d say zero. You get nothing towards his next contract for renting him.

      • Big Tasty

        zero

        • Y’s Guy

In fact, he might even be pissed because they made him shave his beard and add on a premium or just shun them out altogether.

      • D$

When he see the rent increase, he’ll likely give the opposite of a discount.

        • Robinson Tilapia

4K for how many square feet?!?!?!?!

    • Stevie Sacs

I don’t buy Yankees would get him only as a rental anyway. He’s right smack in his prime.

      • D$

If they believe in Severino, and can get Price without giving him up, I bet they don’t try to resign him, and try to put Severino in the ro’ next year. They’re all about cost control, and their big Money lefty is currently breaking down, not to mention their big money righty might explode at any point.

    • Y’s Guy

Because that’s all that’s left on his contract then he becomes an FA?

    • Robinson Tilapia

Because his contract runs out at the end of this season.

      • joeman

if thats the way you read that good for you.

        • Robinson Tilapia

His contract doesn’t run out at the end of this season?

    • dickylarue

because until CC, Arod and Tex are gone the Yankees won’t take on any new 20+ million dollar players.

  • john bones

Nova, Sanchez, Bird, and another lower level prospect for Price and Kinsler. Get it done Cash!

    • SoooPitted

    • Stevie Sacs

Man I like Bird think he’s gonna be decent at least but I think if it it came to it I pull the trigger on that one.

    • joeman

      not for a rental

  • SoooPitted

would Leake be an upgrade over any of our starters? Besides CC of course, i just don’t know that they would take CC out of the rotation for Leake..

    • joeman

Leake is a #3 & they have a few of them right now

    • mitch

no, but Capuano just started a game. They need another arm.

  • MTU

Changed my mind. Not surrendering Severino for a Price Rental.

    • Patrick

I agree with you. Unfortunately that means the Yankees wouldn’t get Price – he will cost at least one top prospect I suspect

      • MTU

        So be it then.

    • joeman

      there u go

    • Tyler

Yeah I think I would have rather given him up for Hamels. I like Price better right now but I just don’t like the idea of having to probably sign him to a 7 year deal after this season. If he had 2-3 years left on his contract right now like Hamels did, I’d definitely give up Severino for him

      • MTU

If he weren’t just a rental I’d consider going there.
1.91 ERA w a .89 WHIP by a 21 yo at AAA has my attention.

        • Tyler

Yeah Severino has been impressive everywhere he’s been. That being said, probably best case in the big leagues is that he becomes David Price. I’d definitely trade him for 3 years of Price in his prime but it’s 7 more years of an aging Price that scares me off.

        • Beauee

Agreed. I think anyone should be made available in the right deal, but I don’t want to use our biggest trade chip on a mere rental.

    • dickylarue

I also would’ve preferred dealing him for Hamels because we’d have Hamels going forward. In all honesty, trading him for Price scares me a bit. We need Price. Every contender needs David Price. But knowing that Hal won’t resign Price to market value makes the thought of dealing for him a bit problematic. If I knew the Yankees were getting Price to keep him? I’d drive Severino to Detroit.

  • Matt

Was the Kimbrel/ Mateo trade straight up? I think I would have pulled the trigger on that deal.

    • Beauee

I think so. It’s within the ballpark given Kimbrel’s value, but I don’t know that I would make that deal. We don’t really need Kimbrel in our BP. Therefore, acquiring him would only be a minor upgrade to what we already have.

      • Matt

Yeah, but Mateo is in low A ball. Admitted that he can run and that skill should translate.

        • Beauee

He is, and he is pretty young for the level. Kids got some great tools. I don’t want to trade him for a marginal upgrade in the BP. It’s just not worth it. If anything he could be used in another trade that would bring back more value.

    • gageagainstthemachine

      Plus his huge contract.

    • Dan Benjamin

You would think but Cashman is a moron! I keep hearing that he looks at the bigger picture but that big picture includes the fact that A-Rod is 40 and its now or never for a championship.

  • Andy

Here’s what I’ll say..If the Jays get Price on the cheap, I’ll be a little annoyed. Other than that, I’ll be fine either way

    • MTU

It won’t be on the cheap.

      • Andy

I hope your right. Other than Hamels I feel like every big name has been dealt without that team giving up their best prospects

        • MTU

Cueto cost the Royals a haul.

    • TheEvilUmpire

Didn’t the Jays already trade the cream of their prospect crop for Tulo? Why would the Tigers want their sloppy seconds?

      • Beauee

No, the Jays kept their big guys: Norris, Sanchez, and Pompey.

        • Andy

          and Travis

      • Desert Yankee

Not sure, but it looks like the Blue Jays still have some nice trading pieces available. Marcus Stroman, Daniel Norris, Aaron Sanchez (just in pitchers) and Dalton Pompey. All of these guys are under control for a long time.

        • Desert Yankee

Sorry for my redundant post. I started typing and got a call. Beauee’s post below says it all.

      • dickylarue

They have enough to get Price if they want to.

  • Still Stucky

So if the theory is the Yankees are supposed to be in the PS race EVERY year…

…and we can assume EVERY July there’ll be players made available for contenders to upgrade (and in 2015, non-contenders)…

…and the Yankees should compete in this market…

…how will the Yankees EVER build a top farm system? They’ll be trading 2 to 6 top farm pieces EVERY year.

And I don’t buy 2015 represents special circumstances. People who argued Hamels was a special case have quickly moved onto Price and this is no different from any year and will be no different than any year.

So is this the year we finally just acknowledge that we want to build a farm system is all just empty talk?

    • craig

I like Price at the right price (yup…I went there). If not…keep everybody and stand pat. I like this team.

      • Andy

        this

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

It’s only an issue if they have big needs at the trade deadline. If they do their work before the season, it would be less necessary.

It’s not like it was difficult to foresee the rotation having significant questions this year.

    • D$

Cashman has made high impact moves over the last few years at very low cost. The context is a little different this year. Hamels was basically a controlled signing that wouldn’t happen in FA that we had opportunity to take advantage of. Price will be interesting, but ultimately, I think we’ll be outbid, but it should be explored.

    • TheEvilUmpire

See the late 90s/ early 2000s. Worked out pretty well for those teams.

      • IVoted4Kodos

That was back when PEDs seemed to ensure that you could sign older hitters to big deals and get a ton of value out of them. You’re back to seeing more traditional aging curves these days.

      • Still Stucky

Indeed, they kept Williams, Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera and Posada.

        • TheEvilUmpire

Keep the best, trade the rest.

        • Chip

And they traded Ruben Rivera, Rickey Ledee, Russ Davis, Sterling Hitchcock, Eric Milton and Christian Guzman

          • TheEvilUmpire

Hitchcock and Milton were the best of that bunch. And they were like 4/5 starters.

            • Chip

Not as prospects though. As prospects Rivera, Hitchcock and Milton were all considered studs. Hell, Hitchcock and Milton were higher rated than Andy.

The job of the front office is to identify which guys your organization can part with and which you should keep. The Yankees did a fantastic job of that in the 90s.

              • Still Stucky

So then why are fans obsessed with doing that for them? We don’t know if Severino is Milton 2.0.

                He could b Pettitte 2.0.

But we want to make that determination for them.

                • Chip

Because it’s fun for them. If it’s not fun for you that’s fine. But it’s not your job to tell everyone else how to entertain themselves.

                  • Still Stucky

And it’s fun for me to point out the total logical inconsistencies of wanting one thing one day and wanting the opposite thing another day with no realization of consequences, cause and effect or how the desires are philosophically opposed.

                    • Chip

Well then more power to you

                    • Still Stucky

                      Likewise.

          • whileaway

            Lowell

            • Chip

Yup. Not every move works out…Nick Johnson and Ruben Rivera for Javy Vazquez.

      • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

Exactly !! ..Just like having a once in a lifetime core of 4 borderline hall of famers worked out

:edit: Jeter & Rivera are no doubt H.O.F.

    • Beauee

I’m not sure what the argument is here. I’d like them to make some moves, but I’d also like to keep Severino/Judge. Mateo and Bird should not be untouchable. Additionally, I think that Severino and Judge should be available in the right deal but not for mere rentals. You can build a farm and still make smart trades. The Rangers acquired Hamels and kept Gallo, Nomar, and Gonzalez. It’s not impossible.

      • Robinson Tilapia

There’s an argument in there somewhere.

      • Stevie Sacs

Fair enough. I would hate for the Yanks to not capitalize on Severino’s high trade value though and him only turn out to be a good reliever.

      • Still Stucky

        Rangers weakened their farm system.

Deep, productive systems aren’t built by holding into 1-2 untouchable guys.

        • Beauee

They did, but the point isn’t to build a farm system for the sake of a farm system. It is to deliver ML talent or to trade those guys for ML talent. I am not convinced that the guys traded in the Hamels deal will every become productive MLers. They lack any resemblance of plate discipline, which usually indicates a high probability of failure at the ML level. I think that in the Yankee system Judge and Severino are the most likely to contribute at the ML level. Bird and Mateo are in the next tier down. I think they are worth trading in the right deal (heck, even Sev and Judge are worth trading in the right deal).

        • Chip

          Farm systems have two purposes:
          1. Provide you players to help your big league roster
          2. Provide you chips to deal for other players

Sure, you can hoard all your prospects but the problem is you can’t play all of them.

Look at the Cubs – they have Baez rotting in AAA because there’s no place for him to play in Chicago.

    • Nick

How many top pieces did we move last year? We came away with three very solid players.

Your post is a bunch of over-the-top negative nancy-ism. They’re not going to go after a superstar every year at the deadline. Even if they do it occasionally, they’ll still be capable of building a solid farm.

      • TripleShortOfACycle

They haven’t done it in 10 years and that was a salary dump in Abreu

    • Chip

There’s a difference between trading some prospects to upgrade your competitive yet flawed roster and dealing all prospects.

The job of the Yankee front office is to determine which of their prospects they need to hold onto and which they can move. For example: The Yankees may love Jorge Mateo but feel that they can move him because he’s far down the line and they are deep with talented young SS in Dermis Garcia, Wilkerman Garcia, Abi Avelino etc or Gary Sanchez because of McCann and Murphy ahead of him and Torrens behind him.

      • Still Stucky

So everyone isn’t including the Yankees #1 prospect by some estimations).

So in order to be serious about building a top farm system, you just don’t have to trade ALL your prospects, is what you’re saying?

        • Chip

No, what I’m saying is that building a top farm system is not about having a lot of prospects, it’s about being smart in identifying how the prospects in your system can best serve your organization’s needs.

You want to have highly rated prospects for two reasons:
          1. They have potential to help your roster
          2. They are attractive to other GMs as trade targets.

Think about it another way – the Braves traded a bunch of very highly rated prospects to the Rangers for Mark Teixiera – 8 years after that trade Tex is still better than any of the players that the Rangers got for him.

          • Still Stucky

You mistake my point. There is NO guarantee.

But putting everyone and anyone but Judge in play for pretty much 3 or 4 wildly disparate players is not consistent with wanting to productive farm system.

If you can make a case for Hamels, or Zobrist, or Price, or Kimbrel, or Cueto, then you’re just chasing any and all big names, which they’ll be every year.

            • Chip

The point is that the Yankees may offer some combination of Severino, Judge, Bird, Mateo, Sanchez for certain players…that’s different from offering all those players for any player.

Again, if the Yankees feel like the two Garcias give the Yankees enough low level SS depth to part with Mateo or if the Yankees feel that they can part with Sanchez because they have McCann ahead of him and Torrens behind him or Bird because they’re not sure he’s an elite bat…etc…then that’s fine.

There’s a difference in dealing those guys for someone like David Price or offering them up for Mike Leake.

              • Still Stucky

Cashman has said 4 were untouchable. Why don’t we roll with that at least?

                • Chip

Because no player is ever untouchable. More than that, because fans don’t have to follow any set of rules when making fantasy trades.

If this notion is really so offensive to you, my suggestion would be to read a book instead of coming onto a Yankee blog the day before the trade deadline.

                  • Still Stucky

It is not, I’m entertaining myself same as you.

    • dave_8

You make a good point. And what was so different about this past off-season? Hamels being traded was in the air back then too. I could make a better case that he was needed coming into the season more than now. We had bigger Tanaka questions. no Nova, a 5th starter competition, CC’s knee, etc. All that’s happened since then is Severino and Judge maintaining or increasing their status — and we’re in 1st place with solid lead and a lesser need in the rotation. You had a much stronger case to throw these names to get Hamels back then. But deadline fever broke out and every day Hamels became more and more of a must-get guy. And after complaining about these big money contracts that kill you at the end, we wanted to add another one? We’re lucky to have 2 of 3 of those big contracts producing again. Everything’s improved since the off-season questions, but we’re acting like the need to get a Hamels has never been greater.

  • Chip

Trade Proposal that I already know won’t happen but want to make anyway just because it is in line with my thinking that the Yankees will swing a blockbuster no one saw coming:

Indians get: Luis Severino, Jorge Mateo, Greg Bird and Ivan Nova
Yankees get: Carlos Carrasco and Jason Kipnis

    • Robinson Tilapia

You oughta get smacked for that.

      • Chip

  • NH Yankee fan

MIssing the post season 2 years in a row and leading a weak AL East and having aging veterans performing (which could not be the case next year) is the perfect reason for adding Price to the rotation. Things may not pan out next year with Arod-Teix living up these numbers. Tanaka-Pineda haven’t proved to be #1’s this year either. Go for it now and signing Price in the off season isn’t out of the question. Give him 3 months to get acclimated and find out that this clubhouse is pretty damn good to be around!

    • IVoted4Kodos

Having aging veterans seems to me to be a reason to not give up young talent. Then you have guys ready to step in next year. If you go all in now, you’re making it very hard on yourself to stay competitive in the future.

      • NH Yankee fan

It’s all an assumption these guys will pan out in the future. Price is a sure thing! The package shouldn’t be as deep as Hamel for the fact that he is a rental. You can’t assume that he won’t resign with the Yankees either. The have the money and the albatross contracts are one year closer to being off the books.

    • ohioyankee

You dont trade the farm for Price sorry 2 months is not worth it for minimal gain. Hamels was a different story you got 3 years

    • LazerTown

What you said seems the reason not to. They got good playoff chances, so unless the jays get price you only getting him to hope on a deeper playoff run. That seems like they should keep the prospects instead of just accepting the future sticks and only this year matters

Does anyone know the specifics on CC’s 2017 vesting option? I know it involves the shoulder but is it just an injury or does he have to miss x number of games for it not to vest?

    • craig

I believe he has to be on the DL for a certain amount of time due to a shoulder injury. In other words, his option is as good as vesting.

    • D$

      From BBRef:

$25M Vesting Option, $5M Buyout 2017 salary guaranteed if he 1) does not end 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, 2) does not spend more than 45 days in 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury or 3) does not make more than six relief appearances in 2016 because of a left shoulder injury

I cannot believe the way Dodgers blow through money. Literally Friedman went to them and asked for $60M to sign Olivera. Only to give him 30M in a signing bonus, rehab him to get him healthy, and then trade him while paying the entire signing bonus. They spent 30M on a guy for literally 3 months.

    • http://batman-news.com nyyankfan7

You forgot to mention how cheap Hal is!

      • Rick

He’s not cheap by any stretch. The Dodgers are just on a crazy “money is absolutely no object” level.

    • blake

It’s insane …..their payroll is the highest of all time and it doesn’t do justice to just how much money they are really blowing

    • Captain Clutch

They basically paid $30m to the Braves to get 2 good prospects that they will most likely flip for Price. That is a lot for a 3 month rental no matter how good Price is.

    • dickylarue

I love it. I love having the moxie to sign an international free agent for big dollars and use him as an asset in a trade. It’s bold thinking.

  • Dan Benjamin

It comes down to this, if the Yankees don’t get Price, there season is over. Arod will not give you another season like this so its now or never for a championship. As for pitching, we went to thinking we had two ACE’s to no ACE’s at all. Tanaka can’t find himself, Pineda is in the same boat with his jerky jerky motions on the mound, Nova is up and down, CC is garbage and Nathan has been pitching well but will get killed in offseason. I say that because (A) he is not a proven dependable guy in the offseason and (B) the kid leaves a mess on the base paths for others to clean up like a child and a adult. Easy fix, put warren back into rotation, bring up Severino, pray to god Tanaka gets his shit together, get Price and either have remaining guys fight for 5th spot or pitch up another pitcher with Price.

The offseason when no games are being played. Does that mean he’ll go hunting? I think he’s a Texan, so that makes sense. Not sure how it relates to this season.

Correct. He might be able to spot start but mostly he is a 5inning pitcher or reliever this year

      • MTU

Time to get his feet wet.

    • dickylarue

He won’t be in the rotation for us this year so this idea of “we have a starter in the minors” is silly. They’re not going to let him come up and start through the end of the season/playoffs.

    • YankeesJunkie

He is close to 100 IP and was at 112 last year so he can safely go 40 IP the rest of the year.

I’m hopeful on Price, but it better be a lot less than what Texas gave up for Hamels. Philly’s getting Hamels for 3+ years at a discount because of Harrison’s contract, while Price is only a rental. So, fingers crossed.

        • Captain Clutch

The Mets puled out of the deal because they think that Gomez has a hip injury.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        That’s why they have Bonilla.

  • cxz

Boras seems PISSED about the allegations that Gomez has hip issues that held up the Mets deal, saying he’s never even been to a hip doctor, let alone had hip problems. My guess? One of two things happened. Either he’s just playing the super protective, bulldogish agent and protecting his client, which could make sense, though money isn’t at stake just yet for him, he’s not yet an impending FA. Or, about to go conspiracy theory on you guys, the Mets leaked info of the trade way too soon to media members, before medicals were reviewed on both sides, and it turned out The Brewers did not like the post TJ report on Wheeler enough to go through with it, so The Mets are covering their asses by saying they saw something they didn’t like instead. Am I crazy?

    • Andy

I thought it was Wheeler the whole time

    • Rick

I think you’re a little crazy, but not THAT far fetched. Boras statement is kind of silly. Just because Gomez has never seen a hip doctor or yet to have an issue, doesn’t mean that an issue isn’t there.

      • Aldukes

yeah.. they could have examined his MRI’s or whatever they do and saw something to stall it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes through today. These god damn writers and shit need to cool it with tweeting crap out before deals are official. We’ve heard about the Marlins-Dodgers deal for 2 days now, at first it was just the 2 teams.. then we learned the Braves were involved. Then the Mets debacle happens.

        • IVoted4Kodos

They do usually say “pending medicals” and “according to sources” though. Everyone just assumes that medicals will check out and that their sources are infallible.

          • Ewing33

Pending medicals I will give them, but according to their sources are stuff they know the “sources” are likely making up, if there are any sources at all because if you are going to post fake shit it is less work to just make it up anyway.

            • Aldukes

I just find it comical that these guys can get away with that type of crap. These guys shouldn’t be saying anything until BOTH teams approve the deal. We’re hearing about trades from these guys before the teams even comment, it’s just not right IMO.

              • IVoted4Kodos

Their job is to report what they’re hearing. If you assume that something they report hearing from their sources is a done deal, that’s on you.

                • Ewing33

You would think there is some responsibility to check the veracity of the stuff they “hear,” and considering how often they are wrong over and over again they would stop posting the stuff!

                • Aldukes

I don’t know how you can defend them to be honest. Go look at Sherman’s tweet. That wasn’t what he was hearing. He wanted to break the news by reporting a “trade” that was about to happen.

    • Aldukes

well the Mets didn’t announce anything.. Sherman tweeted it out and everyone ran with it so based on that notion, I don’t think there’s some conspiracy.

      • cxz

Well obviously the Mets didn’t announce it, per se. But all night, media members were talking about a deal that would “make Mets fans happy”, which came from somewhere in the Mets obviously. What if along the process, when it came to the medical stage, someone in the org was trying to throw a media member a bone and his name was thrown out there, because medicals on their side were good? I realize this has no steam at all, but it’s fun to think about.

        • Aldukes

They were announcing the game and heard about the trade via Sherman’s tweet. I was listening to them. They didn’t hear anything from the Mets organization because Hernandez and co. had no clue what was going on. They didn’t know why Flores was still in the game. Clearly there was no deal because Flores played the whole game.

          • cxz

Well, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and if it came all the way to the medicals stage, there was obviously truth to the rumors, and that info had to come from somewhere, as did the rumors that the Mets were working on a trade that would make their fans happy. Like I said, probably nothing to this, but it doesn’t seem too outlandish to consider.

  • whileaway

Have the yankees traded for a mediocre player yet? They only have 24 hours left.

    • whileaway

      ground control to Major ….

  • The Original Drew

I honestly think there is a strong possibility that the Yankees don’t make a move at all. It happened in 2012 and it could always happening again. We will get the whole “I didn’t like the prices for what was currently out there” spiel from Cashman and they maybe make a waiver claim in August. It is becoming more apparent that they aren’t willing to take on big contracts (due to ownership going for the luxury tax threshold again) and the prices for prospects for big time rental players isn’t exactly the smart way to go either. Say the Yankees go out and get Price and give up Severino and others to get him, that means for it to be worth it they have to resign him. Paying double isn’t something the Yankees normally do, plus giving price the contract he would want (Scherzer $175-200 million) would kill the chances of the luxury tax incentive. So my guess is that either something very very small happens (like the proposed Dustin Ackley trade that the Mariners rejected) or nothing at all.

    • TripleShortOfACycle

      Bingo

    • ohioyankee

24 hours to go but yeah it is looking that way. Just dont see any areas of improvement with what is left and the asking prices

    • Some Asshole

It feels like an eon ago, but the Yankees did acquire Suzuki in July 2012. But that’s away from the huge, earth-shattering, death-defying, strawberry ice cream melt-inducing blockbuster.

      • The Original Drew

Which year was it that they literally did not make a move at the deadline? Maybe 2013?

I say the Yanks acquire Kimbrel to have a shutdown pen..

    Kimbrel- 9th
    Miller- 8th
    Betances- 7th
    Wilson/Warren/Shreve – 6th
    Moreno – Long Man

    • yclept

Because it isn’t shut down enough? Your proposed 6th inning would have me changing the channel with all of the mix and match crap Girardi would do with pitchers who are overqualified.

      • John

If it all falls right, no pitcher should be overused going down the stretch which is highly important

    • cxz

It’s hilarious how quickly Moreno entered the pen conversation for everyone

  • blake

Met fans need to hire cousin Eddy to kidnap the Wilpons

    • Big Tasty

that why the deal fell through.. thet mets wanted to pay Gomez with the Jelly of the Month Club instead of actual money

  • John

I don’t see Price as an option only because of the reluctance to give up Severino, Judge, Bird, Mateo. I honestly wouldn’t mind if the Yankees stand pat this year. The foundation for this farm system is being laid and if that means we just get to the playoffs and not a world series this year but we have a perennial world series contender from 2017-2024. I’m game!

    • MartinRanger

The thing I keep coming back to is that I never expected the Yankees to actually be major contenders this year. and as part of the process of shedding big contracts and replacing them with quality young players, I was okay with that. Obviously with Teix and A-Rod everything changed, but I don’t feel like that means we need to shift what seemed like a relatively sensible direction for the franchise.

That said, I’m still annoyed about Moncada for that exact reason, more so than I’ll be if the Yankees don’t come away with a quality rotation option.

You don’t want to count on prospects, but betting against them in favor of increasing your chances for one year in the crapshoot that is the MLB playoffs seems like a questionable path for this franchise.

  • cxz

Morosi just called Leake a number 2. I need some of what he’s sipping on.

  • Stan

If Severino needs to go in a Price trade I am all for it on the caveat that the front off strongly believes we will sign him long term

    • Patrick

Yeah but that will never happen. Price is going to be a free agent, he is not going to sign an extension.

      • Stan

Not saying he needs to sign an extension just if price is willing to resign… no sense trading for him if he has no intention of pitching in NY

Exactly. Let’s hold our youngsters. Let’s not trade for a rental.

  • Bertin Lefkovic

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/blue-jays-gallardo-interested-rangers.html

I love what Chris Young has done for the Yankees, but should they consider trading him to the Rangers for Gallardo? Is that enough? Is Nova and Young for Gallardo too much? Could the Yankees replace Young on their roster with Judge?

    • IVoted4Kodos

They’re not bringing Judge up to platoon.

      • Bertin Lefkovic

For one month (assuming that he will be called up anyway when rosters expand)? Why not?

        • IVoted4Kodos

It’d be the short end of a platoon, he hasn’t necessarily shown that he’s ready yet, and he’s a top 25 in the game prospect on many lists. He needs to play every day.

          • Tom

Exactly why he needs more time in AAA.

          • Bertin Lefkovic

For one month, what difference does it make if the Yankees need a right-handed bat to replace Young. Would you prefer to replace Young with Tyler Austin or Nick Cave?

            • Robinson Tilapia

              Young is still here.

              • Bertin Lefkovic

Of course he is, but the question is that if the Yankees could package Nova and Young to get Gallardo from the Rangers, with whom would the Yankees replace Young’s RH bat? When you consider the possibility that Judge will be a September callup anyway, wouldn’t he be the best candidate for the job? Who knows? Maybe he could play Beltran out of his full-time job? Maybe he could be the second coming of Shane Spencer (and hopefully much more).

            • IVoted4Kodos

It makes a difference because it’s one month worth of playing time that he won’t get back. Tyler Austin has been terrible and Nick Cave doesn’t exist. Jake Cave is a lefty swinging outfielder who has been mediocre in AA. Texas has no reason to trade pitching for 2 months of Chris Young.

        • TheEvilUmpire

He might get the “we’re not adding you to the roster but we’ll let you hang with the team in September” treatment.

          • Robinson Tilapia

            Isn’t that not allowed anymore?

    • Pkyankfan69

Why would the Rangers trade for a rental?

      • Some Asshole

They’re only a game and a half behind the White Sox.

        • Pkyankfan69

They are 4 GB of the 2nd WC with 5 teams between them and the 2nd WC, they are going nowhere this year. And in this trade crazy trade scenario they would be weakening an already lousy pitching staff.

          • Some Asshole

No argument here. But if the White Sox are gonna go for it, as shitty as they are, why not the Rangers, too? Everyone!

    • Stan

Young is a platoon outfielder.. nowhere near enough for a top of the rotation guy… Nova and Young is probably still not enough for the Rangers

      • Bertin Lefkovic

Article says that they are looking for a right-handed hitter. Are they looking for someone more like Marlon Byrd? Is a three way deal with the Reds possible?

        • Stan

I think they are looking for a full time player.. so yeah a marlon byrd sounds about right

          • Bertin Lefkovic

Except they already have two full-time players in Choo and Hamilton. They platoon DeSheilds and Martin in center. My guess is that they would be looking for someone to platoon with Choo and Hamilton from time to time.

            • Stan

Maybe.. even so Young and Nova won’t get Gallardo… my point about Young being a platoon guy was more to to the point of him not being enough to get gallardo.. even with Nova

      • TheEvilUmpire

        What about BOTH Chris Youngs?

    • blake

Why would the Rangers want Chris Young ?

      • Bertin Lefkovic

        Read the article.

        • blake

I doubt when they say RH bat they mean Chris young

          • Bertin Lefkovic

Why? They have Choo and Hamilton in their corner outfield positions and DeSheilds and Martin platooning in center. Does it seem like they are looking for Justin Upton or even Marlon Byrd?

            • blake

Because they aren’t winning this year

Their farm would suddenly look pretty meh.

      • blake

        It already does….

      • MattPat11

        So?

        • cxz

          *Throws party*

  • cxz

Sources: Blue Jays rotation still largely sucks, no matter what single arm they make a run at.

    • Tom

One ace won’t win the division or 11 playoff games.

      • Diego Moreddardno

Don’t have to win the division. They can get into a WC and then Price can be their Bumgarner. We need to stand pat and hold onto our to prospects.

        • magikfantasy

Don’t need to win the division? So you’re gonna possibly risk an entire season in a 1 game wild card especially when you were 15 games over .500 at one point in the season

      • ohioyankee

CC came the closest for the Brewers

        • Tar

Good gracious he was an absolute beast that post season

        • Tom

The Brewers lost 3-1 against Philly and CC lost his only start in that series.

          • Rick

Just ignore what he did in the regular season … nothing to see there.

          • ohioyankee

      • Stan

they can win 6 playoff games on short rest.. thats a good start

      • Game 3

        Two words: Madison Bumgarner

  • MartinRanger

Is there really a point of trading for a non-Price type pitcher if CC keeps his rotation spot? Because you are either trading away/demoting Eovaldi/Warren/Nova, all of whom could well outperform an Iwakuma or Leake or Gallardo?

Or you go to a six man rotation. But beyond CC there isn’t a guy I think deserves to get kicked out, and CC isn’t going anywhere.

    • ohioyankee

Not sure Nova or even one of Pineda or Tanaka make it through the end of the season.

      • MartinRanger

That’s the one argument to be made, but you could also argue that Warren is just as good an insurance policy as any trade option. And the odds you need three replacement starters are a) low b) you’re pretty hosed if you lose two of those three regardless.

    • cxz

I’d take Iwakuma over Nova every day of the week.

      • Stan

Iwakuma is probably the 3rd best pitcher in the yankees rotation if they trade for him

        • MartinRanger

I think Eovaldi is better at this point.

It’s not that I don’t want Iwakuma as a no. 3 or 4, it’s that I don’t know how much the Yankees gain by replacing somebody like Nova or Warren in return for some potentially valuable young players. And I’m really opposed to Nate going to the pen because he seems to be making real progress with his secondary pitches.

          • Stan

Eovaldi has been pitching great (though i’d like to see some more length from him) but Eovaldi is a work in progress… a month and a half of pitching well doesn’t erase his career numbers to me yet

      • MartinRanger

Really? He’s got a 5.03 FIP playing half his games in Safeco.

EDIT: that doesn’t even count his recent bomb against the D-Backs. If I knew he was 2013-2014 Iwakuma I’d be for it but he’s 34 years old.

        • Some Asshole

          …in 47 innings. That’s just statistical noise.

Reminds me of the time I put John Habyan as the starter in my video games because he had such a low ERA in 1990.

      • Super Sub-Par ACK!ley

        Disagree.

        • cxz

That’s alright, don’t have to agree with me, you’re entitled to that. I just don’t even remotely trust Nova yet, I wouldn’t feel good about handing him the ball in game 3, and I would feel good about handing Iwakuma the ball in said scenario.

    • WT2

Which is the reason I keep saying all these news about the Yanks acquiring a starting pitcher is bull.

Instead the Yanks will concentrate on the BP and maybe a 2B RH.

They may even just stay path and bring Severino to the BP in August if they can’t find anything out there too.

  • John

Also something else to look at in terms of trading for rentals, Ivan Nova would be quite an attractive asset because he’s a proven winner in a big market and he has one more year of team control after this season

    • SoooPitted

just gotta hope they all overlook the whole “coming off of Tommy John” thing

      • John

Pitchers come off of Tommy John a lot in recent years and it’s widely believe that pitchers are more effective the further removed from the surgery, so yes a team may be willing to take a chance to see if that happens

        • Robinson Tilapia

That ignores an awful lot of the other side of the coin.

    • Now Batting

He’s 28 with an exactly league average career ERA+ and coming off TJS. His only value is as a throw in.

      • John

League Average is good! Everybody is screaming about CC and how he needs to be removed from the rotation and that if he was league average that he would be an improvement based off of the peripheral statistics!

        • Now Batting

Has Nova ever started across a full MLB season?

          • Stan

about even really… cc had the injection and nova had the fatigue

  • NH Yankee fan

For all the good things the offense has done this year. They can be handled on any given night. That has been proven time and time again. It’s a team built on HR’s. Mediocre pitching has given them fits during the season. That’s why you need a good starting pitcher to add to the staff. With Tanaka’s outing last night I think it’s a blessing that he was just mediocre. Just shows Cashman that they need another starter.

    • Still Stucky

      Do you actually watch baseball?

    • Big Tasty

all in the eyes of the beholder.. id say Tanaka, without having remotley close to his best stuff, kept em in the game and as for the offense, it happens… it’s only 1 of 162. The offense should be the last thing on the list of problems

      • Big Tasty

thats what separates the average pitcher from the good ones is their ability to limit damage when they dont have their “A” game

        • NH Yankee fan

More often than not, he’s not had his “A” game this year.

      • NH Yankee fan

He’s paid $155 million not to be an average pitcher!

    • I am Brett Godner’s Shoes

I can only imagine the asking price, that’s the problem. He also hasn’t been particularly good this season, so he’d be a bit of a project, which isn’t exactly what fits our needs right now. I do like him though.

      • Preston

Right, I’m interested. But this is more of an off-season acquisition.

  • blake

@Ken_Rosenthal: Executive involved in bidding for Price believes #BlueJays may indeed be close to landing him. “Not going to go on much longer,” he said.

    • Dan A.

Shit…at least the Yanks have his number if he does go to TOR.

    • SoooPitted

come on. people can rag on the rest of their rotation all the want. but its a fact that landing Tulo and Price will make them a MUCH better team

      • whileaway

if everything breaks right for them. Toronto has to play great ball for the last 2 months. Price could bomb.

        • jjyank

And Tulo has to not get hurt playing on astro turf…lets not pretend the Jays are a slam dunk even if they get Price. We’ll see, and we have a pretty nice head start.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Much better team still eight games behind in the loss column.

    • dickylarue

Would definitely make them a force for one of the wildcard spots. Just get in the playoffs and see what happens

    • cxz

If that’s the case, The Dodgers are satisfied with their rotation as is, that’s my biggest takeaway.

    • Captain Clutch

I think the Jays are crazy if they give up a ton for him. They aren’t good enough to win anything this year, they won’t sign him as a free agent so giving up a lot for a 3 month rental is ridiculous for them. Unless of course they don’t give up as much as people think it will take.

  • jmpnyy

Yanks go 33-29 to finish 90-72.Jays have to go 40-21 and Os 40-22 to overtake Yanks. Consistency is what is needed.

  • blake

The Jays are 8 games back in the LC but Price would certainly change the look of that club

    • ohioyankee

      Wildcard they are right there

      • blake

At the same time…..if they do this and miss the playoffs still…..they have seriously damaged their future with nothing to show for it

    • Douglas Rau

What team has traded away their “best” prospects so far, though? The Rangers gave up some good guys for Hamels but I wouldn’t say they were overall great. The Rangers held onto to their very best (Joey Gallo) and from what I read, 2 of the 3 guys who went from the Royals to the Reds in the Cueto deal could very well wind up in the bullpen.

      • Ewing33

Just the guys in the system with the most talent, not necessarily their very best guys.

Probably less than we would hope if it came down to that. The rest of the league seems to criminally under rate him, no matter how good he shows he is.

    • magikfantasy

He’s one of those players that has more value to his current team then he does trade value

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

Gomez has 2 years at, i think like 8M a year, and that got a glove first SS and a young, controlled pitcher Wheeler coming off of TJ surgery. Brett is more expensive, not as much as a name as Gomez but easily better this year. Something better than this deal. Maybe something better than Cespedes for Porcello, but not as good as Upton for Max Fried/Jace Peterson/Dustin Peterson/Mallex Smith. That’s a big range, anyone have a good comp?

  • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam
    • Ewing33

I love how the Jays are going to give up all their future pitching and then in a few years wonder why their pitching still sucks every year.

      • https://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

AA is putting his shot here to bring the WS trophy north of the border again. Honestly, that door is going to close shut right after the 2016 season, you’d think.

        • Ewing33

Fair enough. He is a long shot though trying to come from behind. This deal is obviously not done yet though, and I liked the Tulo trade he made personally.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

they’re all in for this year because if they don’t make the playoffs AA will probably be gone along with the manager, Gibby, who was hired by AA, and they feel they have a chance this year and with a few of their aging vets like Encarnacion and Bautista this opportunity might not come their way again. The fans in Toronto are clambering for a top starter and reliever now they have Tulo. And in reality who knows how many of the prospects will ever make it. It’s go for the WS now instead of hoping you’ve got the prospects to get this close in the future

    • Robinson Tilapia

He was making such an gamechanging impact for the Tigers this season.

  • zzzzzz

just don’t want price to go within our division

      • zzzzzz

no I know we had to a couple years ago. But the thought of him as a bluejay makes me mad

        • Robinson Tilapia

          I’m sorry.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

we’ve got 13 games left with the Blue Jays before the playoffs

    • Frittoman626

I say let the Jays get Price. He’ll cost a ton, the Blue Jays won’t resign him, and the Yankees don’t really struggle against him.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

I guess that’s a good rationalization for not closing the deal on him. He’s not just a rental if he can be signed for a longer extension and I would think whoever takes him on will likely keep him for 5 years anyway. A great lefty SP and I’m concerned with Cashman letting all the top pitchers go and maybe settling for a grade B pitcher that isn’t going to be much better, if any, than what we already have. If the Blue Jays sign Price with Tulo and Donaldson and their lineup we’d better watch out because they’re really going to be pressing us for the division lead no matter how far they’re behind right now

  • blake

        Or this offseason…….

Dodgers and Yanks should save the prospects and sit this one out and if you want him sign him as a free agent. Price isn’t signing there anyway just a rental for Jays obviously.

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

I wouldn’t be too certain about them not signing him if they can find it in their budget. I don’t think the mentality is to only bring him on as a rental

  • twenty1miles

I’m actually okay with the Blue Jays gutting their system (including the Tulo trade) for a chance to be in the playoffs…for probably one postseason. Assuming they don’t resign Price, which I can’t really see.

    • Danny Aiello Jr.

I can see him staying. Especially if they finish up decently. The offense should give him plenty of run support next year, he knows the division, not to mention even if he got around 20 mil a year, the Jays would still have another 20 in space to bring in some more.

      • twenty1miles

All fair points. I guess it all depends on the willingness of the Jays to spend.

        • Danny Aiello Jr.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he will if push comes to shove, but I can see a scenario where he will. If the Jays are going all in right now, with 40 mil coming off the books next year, you would think they have to try to lock Price up as plan A.

          • twenty1miles

Damn, didn’t realize they’re gonna have that much free money. Really would prefer Price to not come back to the AL East. Except for in pinstripes.

They make it seem like it’s Kate Upton that gained 5 pounds and they need to take that off. With the panda it’s more like 100 pounds.

    • NH Yankee fan

Yeah let’s wait til the end of the season to try this. No way is he ever going to be in shape. He is what he is!

  • Douglas Rau

So Price is about 20 months younger then Hamels and now can’t be made a qualifying offer (read: tied to draft pick compensation) because he won’t spend the entire season with his last team…..I think Cashman just started writing out a check for him for the off-season with “fill in whatever amount you want” in the memo line.

    • dickylarue

They won’t sign him, Cueto or anyone costing over 20 million until Arod, CC and Tex are off the books.

      • Douglas Rau

Really? They’ll have Teixeira ($22.5 million) and Beltran ($15 million) off the books after 2016 and CC ($25 million, if his option vests) and A-Rod ($20 mill) after 2017. You don’t think they’d be okay with the payroll being really high for one season until other contracts expire, to balance things out? Plus, they’re clearly grooming Aaron Judge and Greg Bird, respectively, to at least get a shot at replacing those guys and they’d be cheap for the first few years. Now sure, the whole #prospectsaresuspects able and “can’t fail” prospects do, all the time (looking at you, Dustin Ackley/Jesus Montero/Justin Smoak) but you would think the Yankees would at least give them a shot to fail and not spend big money right away after those positions clear up, to replace those guys?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

How this season ends could factor into that decision, but I suspect you are correct.

It would only be a one year overlap with Tex and Beltran though, with possible internal, cheap replacements for both of those guys, so I don’t think it’s completely out of the question.

        • Douglas Rau

Plus, who knows who will be out there to be had on the free agent market after the 2016 season? I’ve tried to google it but all I can find are prospective lists of free agents after this season.

.Yanked would be blessed to get leaks if they are refusing to include thier top four prospects in any deal. That means they were only in the Price talks as a PR stunt or held out hope the Tigers brain trust got addicted to stupid pills. Not getting a quality starter will come back to haunt them in the playoffs but the bar is lower these days and just getting in the post season might be the only goal for this year.

Reminds me of the Yankee teams that ran out there A-Rod (in his prime….which actually doesn’t look too different from A-Rod at the plate right now), Sheffield, Matsui…..and ran out on the mound Kevin Brown, an older Al Leiter (sorry, Al, love you as a commentator but it’s the truth), Jaret Wright, Javier Vazquez Parts I and II (the only parts one and two possibly more disappointing then Star Wars).

The Yankees tried to get the price for Price as high as possible.

No, he’s arguably the most important defensive player on the team hitting way over league average since the end of May: didi. The other very important defensive player, Brian McCann, is top 5 for almost every single offensive stat for MLB catchers. Pitchers throw the ball, they don’t bat in the American League.

  • blake

As I’ve said many times…..I saw Norris pitch a lot in high school….he was better in high school than MadBum was….I begged the Yankees to draft him. They took DBJ instead……the gift and decision that keeps on giving

    • Captain Clutch

Trading one of their top pitching prospects for a 3 month rental is ridiculous.

          • Joy Illimited

I guess if I were a Toronto fan I would like to see desperation moves….best offense in the game for years now and nothing, not even a WC berth, to show for it. EE and JB aren’t getting any younger; the time for the Blue Jays is now.

              that’s the thinking around Toronto

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

he might not be a rental. They might sign him for 5 years at the end of the season if they’ve got the money

  • KimbrelSlice

With the way we’ve handled Price over the years I welcome the Jays to acquire Price.

  • YankeeFan™

It’s not impossible to out slug the other team with crappy pitching our Yankees use to do that, only thing is that don’t work in the postseason.

    • LazerTown

Because the teams with the most access always win it? Remember the Phillies.

  • ZachA

Definitely don’t want Price as a rental if it costs a top 4 prospect. Just go with the team you have, enjoy the budding farm system, and throw $200 million at Price in the offseason if you like him that much. Win, win, win. We know that anything can happen in the postseason, so just get there this year. Royals won the pennant with a “true ace,” and if Tanaka and Pineda get things figured out by October, you’ll be fine. Maybe grab a cheaper guy like Smardzija, but keep the young talent you’ve worked hard to acquire.

    • ohioyankee

They arent spending 200 million on another pitcher.

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

that’s ok but if we don’t make the playoffs and the Jays do? Then will we think differently? And we don’t just want to make the playoffs we want to win the WS and do we have the horses to do that against teams like Kansas City or Houston or the Dodgers or the LA Angels, or whoever?

11:17am: As Toronto emerges, other suitors seem to be falling back in the discussion. The Yankees “have tried” to join the discussion, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post, but it’s not clear they’re willing to include as much in the way of top prospects. The Giants are “pessimistic” of getting something done, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have no plans of including Alex Wood — if they acquire him — in deals to any other teams, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com tweets.
This obviously makes a lot of sense. It probably cost the Dodgers more to acquire Wood than it would for them to nab Price.

I think it takes a lot of balls for Cash to hold back on Price…and I applaud that. If he costs too much, then let’s move on and get someone else. We are up 6 games and the post season is a crap-shoot. Let’s go to war.

    • dickylarue

And if we’re up only 4 games after the weekend w/13 to play against Toronto will you still feel as strongly?

Acting like we have the division wrapped up is the height of arrogance by a lot of Yankee fans in here. 6 games with 2 months to go is NOTHING.

      • Sir Didi Nakamura

Agreed. All of you talking about acquiring Price or Hamels to pitch Game 1 in the postseason are being stupid. The whole point of acquiring Price is to MAKE the postseason. Which we haven’t done yet.

        • dickylarue

          Yup.

      • LazerTown

6 is decent lead. It can be lost, it is just really expensive for the future doing the guarantee

        • LazerTown

You trade so much of the future for 10 stats of price

          • dickylarue

I was against Severino for a rental. For Hamels, I was happy to deal him.

      • craig

I will still feel the same way. You are acting as if getting Price guaranteed a WS win. It doesn’t guarantee anything. I’ll take my chances with the team we have and any upgrades (if any are made) and keep the prospects.

This is a good team. MLB is not a video game. This was clearly a tough decision for Cash, but he has made his call, and history has shown us that Cash is right a large majority of the times.

Give me his last bad trade?

How about the Swisher deal, the McCarthy deal or the Headley deal?

Okay…how about not signing McCarthy this year?

The Yankees are going to have to play well for the remaining 62 games (and hopefully post-season) no matter what. Let’s go to battle with who we have. I like our chances.

  • magikfantasy

Honestly the Yankees shouldn’t do a single thing now, getting an ace for the playoffs was all that they really needed & with price off the table it’s not worth changing anything about this team.

  • Pkyankfan69

Done deal… Price to the Jays per Heyman

  • Scheister of Doom

The Yankees will destroy Price if he’s a Blue Jay. Demolish that scurvy fuck.

  • YankeeFan™

AA probably thinking he can trade JBats or Edwin in the offseason

I think it’s pretty much Playoffs or retooling time again for that franchise.

        • Big Tasty

both on cheap as shit 1 year deals

  • dayanks

Yankees still have Price’s number. Like it even matters!

  • Scheister of Doom

Trade Heathcott, Adam Warren and Ramon Flores for Kimbrel. I know, I know my trade proposal sucks.

    • Adam

I don’t think I’d do warren for Kimbrel straight up.
I want to see Warren get a full year shot as a starter.

      • Scheister of Doom

Warren looked great prior to his undeserving demotion, I guess I’d be selling high. Or just high.

    • Veteran presents

I’m not trading Warren for a reliever when our starters have so many damn question marks at this point.

      • Scheister of Doom

But, Warren is a reliever right now. I read the disclaimer stating my trade proposal sucks and I agree, I don’t want to trade anyone either. I just think Mitchell can do what Warren is.

        • Veteran presents

Well, he could be stretched back out rather easily. I don’t trust Mitchell.

  • Bertin Lefkovic

How would the prospects that Toronto sent to Colorado and Detroit compare to Yankee prospects?

    • ohioyankee

Pretty much all of their top 5

    • dayanks

Our top 5, Warren or Nova, couple of B prospects.

  • ohioyankee

    Get Me Ackley Now

    • Aldukes

      no thanks

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Need to add a starter first.

      Even then…

      • Bertin Lefkovic

        Mitchell or Severino can start.

        • D$

Severino has an innings limit coming up relatively soon.

          • Bertin Lefkovic

So they should use those bullets with the Yankees and when he runs out, replace him with Mitchell.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting

And when one or more of the starters get hurt???

            • LazerTown

Why. They got several good relievers in the minors

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

Severino is fast approaching his innings limit.
Mitchell just adds another question mark, and leaves little in the way of depth.

The rotation is a concern as is (more so than 2B). Subtracting from the rotation makes it a bigger concern.

    • Pkyankfan69

How about Judge + Severino to Japan for Igawa?

      • IVoted4Kodos

Only if we throw in $25 mil for old times sake.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

      meh, nah.

  • Danny Aiello Jr.

Well, the Yankees have stood their ground this far. Might as well continue to do so. No reason to overreact and do something stupid now.

    • Veteran presents

Like give up Severino for Shark?

      • Danny Aiello Jr.

        Severino + Judge for Ackley.

      • LazerTown

I I’m sure this has already been suggested

    • https://www.facebook.com/daniel.wasserman.35 nsalem

Stop trolling … both of you

        • dayanks

How am I trolling? Have the Tigers gotten anywhere in the last 10 years?

          • Rick

If getting somewhere exclusively means winning the world series, then no. But if being one of the more successful teams over the last decade means they got somewhere, then yes. Successful seasons and sustained success if not solely defined by rings. I guess the Braves barely got anywhere when they won 17 straight division titles and only 1 world series.

    • ohioyankee

He has made some good moves. Cabrera was a steal and Price now looks like a steal, they gave up Smyly and Jackson for the Jays top prospects, But not signing Scherzer and extending Verlander don’t look good

    • Sir Didi Nakamura

When dealing with desperate people you almost always look like a genius.

  • dayanks

God, I hope the Yankees don’t make any haste, over the top moves

    • Rick

What haste over the top move is there to make now? lol

      • dayanks

Very true! But we could go after a Padre starter ( I hope not)

        • Sir Didi Nakamura

Tyson Ross would be a fantastic get.

          • ohioyankee

Can we get him for Flores that seems to be all we can trade

            • Sir Didi Nakamura

I’d start with Mateo since they seem to value him highly.

          • Douglas Rau

Pricey too, though. He has 2 years of team control left?

  • dickylarue

Severino for Ackley! Get it done Cash! We need to win the back page back!

    • Rob

Might as well call Andy and Mo too.

      • bernbabybern

          Andy was throwing in ST.

      • dickylarue

I’d let Wells start a game at this point.

Can they get him for Flores. He is our one trade chip

At YS3 Ackley’s numbers are .296 BA .397OPB .481 Slugging% for an.878 OPS. This is in 63 PA’s so it is a small but not tiny sample size. Maybe the Yankees are of the belief that this means something and if they could get him for the right price they would take the shot. Maybe it’s worth it. who know? Out of curiosity I compared Cano’s numbers at Safeco and YS3 and his OPS was .94 points higher at YS3 than Safeco (.906 to .812) not a small sample size. Ackley has a .660 OPS at Safeco and maybe the FO thinks that Ackley would OPS between .740 to .770 in NY.

    • dayanks

Asking price was too high. Deal already fell through.

    • Deep Thoughts

It’s possible that getting away from the Mariners “hack at everything and see no more than 3 pitches per PA” coaching would help. But he’s been in that system his entire pro career. That’s a lot of unlearning to do.

  • cxz

I’m so glad Cashman has played it cool and stopped himself from overpaying in any of these deals we’ve saw so far. It’s better to lose out and stick to the plan than impulse buy. Still plenty of time for something reasonable to come to fruition.

    • Frittoman626

The deals all these teams have made are ridiculous, but to be fair all those teams didn’t have a True #1 pitcher.

    And there goes Price

tud southpaw David Price has been tradedfrom the Tigers to the Blue Jays, per CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Aside from the inclusion of Toronto pitching prospectDaniel Norris, details of the deal have yet to be announced. Neither team has confirmed.

Price is enjoying arguably his best season for disappointing Detroit. He is 9-4 and, if maintained, his 2.53 ERA would be the best of his career.

The 22-year-old Norris has made five starts for Toronto this season and owns a 1-1 record and 3.86 ERA.

    • Preston

Norris is having a bad year too. I don’t know that this is a bad trade for them. I just know that the only way we beat that offer is by giving them Severino. And I’m glad Cashman wasn’t willing to do that.

    • dickylarue

What bothers me is that all the other AL contenders, and even the borderline teams such as the Jays and O’s are going for it and we are standing pat. While I would not want to part with the future of the club, the team has a real shot of winning this year and there are no guarantees that Tex and Alex will repeat their performance next year. They either need to call up Severino or try to acquire another backender just for stability.

Have you saw the price tag these teams have had to give up? We’re in good enough spot to avoid those types of overpays. Plus, still time left.

      • TheStraw

I agree. But if our rotation suffers from bad performance/health the remainder of season, we are in trouble. Who is still out there other than Shields who would make an impact? Neither Tanaka nor Pineda have logged major innings since coming to NY, and have looked shaky at times.

        • IVoted4Kodos

Every single team in baseball would be in trouble if their rotation suffered from bad performance or health. Including the Jays and Royals.

I bet a WC comes from the AL east now. Probably the Jays. Other will probably go to either Hou or Laa. Twins can’t hang with those teams.

  • twenty1miles

Makes me think the Yanks won’t go for pitching help now, which isn’t the worst thing. But if Cash asked, other team’s would probably figure we’re getting desperate to add a piece in response. But what do I know?

  • No 2013 again

Should they go after a Leake-type pitcher now? And if they do, will they finally take CC out of the rotation? Otherwise, there’s not a lot left to be done..

    • ohioyankee

Don’t think so. Leake is going to cost at least Sanchez. I think he doesn’t do anythiny maybe sign Wandy R and bring Cap back and stuff them at AAA.

Did you really expect them to trade for a star player? This isn’t 2000 anymore, and David Justice was an older star.. The yankees just don’t do those deals anymore, they trade their underachieving prospects for mediocre/bad major leaugers who sometimes outperform themselves for a bit, before they come back to earth and get released. Welcome to the post dynasty..And no, i didn’t want Price, but Hamels should of been a consideration.

well… i see it as: the post-dynasty was overpaying underachieving players and not giving any of our prospects a chance on our team. This is something different. this is clearly trying to hang on to our farm system, and going back to a similar scenario where the core 4 were all homegrown… thats how i like to see it ;)

      • ohioyankee

The problem with that is that those teams were bad when they built that core. This team is not

If it is official the talk shows and media scrums will go nuts. They’ll be wild with excitement. Adding Tulo and Price in the same week? I don’t even want to turn it on and listen to it. It will be delirium. It will be “World Series here we come!”

  • Centaur Hips

On the plus side the Jays system probably just clapsed in the system rankings. Tigers needed prospects badly. Jays really have to capitalize the next few years.

    • Veteran presents

Where did their system rank this year?

  • PriceyMustacheMasher

Daniel Norris is 1-0 against the Yankees this season and David Price is 0-1. The real winner of this trade is obviously the Tigers for raping the Blue Jays. And then the Yankees also win a little because now we get to destroy Price a couple of times more this season

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

if he turns out to be the same Price he was when we beat him

  • Danny Aiello Jr.

To validate a move like this the Jays need to at minimum, resign Price. If he walks, it better be with a WS ring, because otherwise you went all in and didn’t even have top pair.

    • SoooPitted

i pretty much settled for the idea that any trade for Price would NOT be worth it, unless he resigns with the club that traded for him.. which is exactly what you just laid out

    • Preston

Making the playoffs for the first time in 22 seasons is probably goal number one. And doing that would probably make Price feel a lot more comfortable re-signing, because if they’ve done all this and don’t make the PS, the team looks like a dumpster fire of mismanagement.

    • D$

I don’t understand this commonly held line of logic. How is doing something that every other team has the ability to do tied to a completely independent trade?

      • Danny Aiello Jr.

I think it has to do with the though “player Xx will get us to where we need to be.” Regardless of how flawed the logic may be, it’s true in every sport. When you make a big trade or hand out a big contract, you expect results. This trade has higher stakes since you gave up top prospects expected to contribute for 2-3 months of a player. They need to resign that player to offset expected contributions or win for that trade to look positive.

  • Dan A.

I would have given up Severino in either of the Price or Hamels deals. But I don’t have all the information. Both acquiring teams gave up a ton to get them. I can’t fault Cashman for not matching those prices. There is still over a day left until the deadline, and it’s still a buyer’s market for SP. They’ll get something done.

    • Aldukes

      I would agree with this

    • Ewing33

The Philles got three really, really good prospects. I don’t think just Severino would have even gotten the deal done.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

The return for 2-months of Price doesn’t seem like it’s a buyer’s market.

      • Dan A.

Not getting an ace. But there are a ton of mid-rotation starters. Leake, Iwakuma, SD’s whole staff.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

That doesn’t move the needle much, especially if CC stays in the rotation (which he likely will).

          • Dan A.

Well, it all comes down to CC. But didn’t it always? If they’re not willing to move him, it will hurt any upgrade. I’d rather go with Evo or Nova over any of those, all things considered.

        • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

Is that going to do it for us? Is it really an upgrade on what we already have?

    • ohioyankee

Don’t think there are really any updates left in the starting market. I think he doesn’t do anything and hordes some starters at AAA. Wandy R, Capuano, etc

    • cxz

Severino+ lesser pieces for Hamels? Sure, but wouldn’t get it done. Severino for 2 months of Price? No thanks, massive, massive overpay.

    • Big Tasty

      the market has shifted considerably

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ Bob(bobby) M.

  • Centaur Hips

Outside of maybe Kazmir, prices for SP have been pretty high. Cash loves low cost guys and that’s pretty much all that’s left now unless he likes a Padres SP.

    • Ewing33

I thought Cueto and Kazmir were fair. Hamels and Price got nice value.

    • ohioyankee

Agreed he is going to horde the masses in AAA.

  • PriceyMustacheMasher

Just to give you all an idea on how “good” the Blue Jays system is now, their 5th rated prospect is Vladimir Guererro Jr who they just signed an an international amateur.. Yes, their 5th rated prospect is a 16 year old dominican amateur.. Good luck in the future Blue Jays

    • Rick

While on it’s face that looks awful … he was extremely well regarded

      • Preston

Similarly to all the top guys the Yankees signed. Nobody considers any of them top 20 even after they’ve debuted and played pretty good baseball at various rookie levels.

        • Rick

          Also a valid point

    • Veteran presents

What are people fretting about Toronto and KC for? We shouldn’t be emulating them. We should be tracking the Dodgers!

What are they doing today? They are turning a $60MM Cuban they didn’t even need into a pitcher that can help them today, one that can help them for four years and another top prospect to help them re-stock their farm. They’ll go after Price in the off season AND keep their prospects. That’s what the Yanks should be doing.

The Yanks should have gotten their Ace last winter when it was obvious Tanaka, Pineda and CC were too high risk. And the Ace was there for the taking. Boras has been right all along.

Go small now, go big in the winter. Start acting like the Yankees again. Not like the Royals.

Okay we are in first place, didn’t just massively overpay for Price or Hamels, and we are losing our fucking minds.. Lets atleast get some confirmation before we all call Pineda out for the year.. But atleast we will get to see Severino if Big Mike goes down.. And of, remember last year when McCarthy was so great? Just proves you don’t need an ace to improve your team, so calm the fuck down

    • zzzzzz

the point is that they aren’t getting anyone. And if they are going to leave the rotation as is and put warren in. Tell me how that rotation will survive the last two months

      • PriceyMustacheMasher

They aren’t getting anyone? The trade deadline is not over.. More than 24 hours left and several mid rotation arms are left, so calm down

While I largely agree with you, we definitely need pitching if we’re going to sit pretty if Pineda is hurt as bad as it’s being made to sound, this is by no stretch a small deal.

      • PriceyMustacheMasher

I’m with you, I want more pitching too, but people are acting like the deadline is already over and forget that a mid rotation arm can be great too, just like McCarthy was last year

        • ohioyankee

Your right a rotation of Tanaka, Evo, Capuano, CC, and Warren looks great

          • PriceyMustacheMasher

Cap is gone, maybe you should start paying attention dumbass.. But the deadline is not over, try to open your eyes and atleast give them until the deadline passes

            • ohioyankee

Cap is not gone he is on waivers dumb ass. If he clears he can be reassigned. They needed a #2 and didn’t even try. #4 and #5 starters are not an upgrade sorry.

              • PriceyMustacheMasher

So he is still in the rotation despite being on waivers? That man sure is multitalented….

                • ohioyankee

You said he was gone man you can’t even read your own posts, I feel for you. He was their #5 starter before and when he clears they will put him back in the rotation to save his 5 million dollars

                  • PriceyMustacheMasher

Yeah please feel for me when I say he is a gone man after you stated he was in the rotation..

Your right a rotation of Tanaka, Evo, Capuano, CC, and Warren looks great

        • cxz

Eh, to be honest, this year is different. We’re clear divisions leader and expecting another McCarthy is asking a lot. We’ve got to think bigger than Mike Leake imo, if at all possible. The need was already there before hearing both Nova and Pineda are down. I mean now, we can shift Warren back in rotation for the time being, but Cashman really, really should try to get creative here. Keep his head about him, but get creative and think about a considerable upgrade.

You know what, considering we’ve heard nothing about Pineda until Mike Francesca said so as a guest on his own show. I’m going to wait for confirmation before panicking.

Im more then happy to keep the youth and not overspend but when are they actually going to commit to it instead of just talking about it ? they seem to be half in, half out where they talk publicly how much they value their youth but then dont play them in a typical actions speak louder then words here.

If they were really serious about it then bring up mitchell, severino, refsnyder, and move cc to the bullpen for warren. im just tired of the double talk which makes cashman and co. look like they are lying through their teeth

  • Frittoman626

Well, if Big Mike is injured, Severino almost certainly has to be brought up… Right?

    • Aldukes

      he’s got to be..

    • jonathon

Well they had a chance to bring up mitchell tonight and let him start but instead their going with cc.

      • Frittoman626

        Probably because:
        1. Francesa is being an asshole and is trolling everyone.
        2. Texas best hitters besides Beltre are LHB.

  • Dan A.

If Pineda is really out, and you think Cashman is going to panic and overpay for a mid-rotation SP, then you don’t know Cashman

    • Centaur Hips

I think he was going to make a move regardless, but I doubt this changes his stance much if true.

    • magikfantasy

That’s not what I’m worried about, tanaka has been having problems since returning from his injury, one bad pitch & the Yankees have no starters down the stretch

      • Big Tasty

we still got CC… (eyes well up)

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

I’d guess no on that, unless in AAA.

  • Dalek Jeter

Here is Francesa’s exact quote btw:

“I hear Pineda’s hurt,” Francesa told WFAN co-hosts Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on Thursday afternoon. “He’s not pitching tonight, and he might be badly hurt. And I hear Nova’s hurting.”

Some hard hitting definitive statements there you all are losing your shit over.

    • Rob

I don’t follow the minors much. Is he fully stretched out? Does he have innings limits? Does Warren?

      • grandedan

He should be able to give 75 pitches next time out. That’s almost stretched out. Better than what Warren could give right now.

  • zzzzzz

not going to be happy until they get one of the padres pitchers

Man that would be pretty disastrous if Nova and Pineda are hurt. I am trying not to freak out … and mostly not succeeding

    • zzzzzz

what my concern is that if they knew this awhile ago why didn’t they make a trade then

      • cxz

Asking prices have been ridiculous on the guys that have been dealt. This news doesn’t really make overpaying more justifiable.

  • NH Yankee fan

AA has added Russell Martin, Donaldson, Tulo and Price… That is pretty impressive.. Needs more, but that isn’t a bad haul!

  • grandedan

Cashman really earns his keep now. Not by what he gets, but by what he refuses to give up. Yanks over a barrel now. Just remember you’ve got a six game lead and potential internal options with Mitchell and Severino. Stick Moreno in the rotation and bring up Severino/Mitchell when either is ready. Keep Warren in pen for now.

  • Nick Bartolone

James Shields and Kimbrel will be on their way to NYC before you know it

    • NH Yankee fan

Sounds reasonable now if this shit is true about Pineda and Nova.. Still need a starter (Warren) Replacing Warren with Kimbrel makes sense if you don’t give up the farm for them.

    • Centaur Hips

They could take advantage of this and give him more time off to limit his innings.

Tightness and forearm are two words that you never want to hear in the same sentence when it comes to pitching. That’s troubling.
