• The week started with an off-day, then the Reds came to the Bronx for an interleague series. The Yankees picked up 4-2 win Tuesday and a 9-5 win Wednesday for a quick two-game sweep.
• The Rays came to town next for a big four-game series. The Yankees walked off with a 6-5 win Thursday, then got a great performance from Masahiro Tanaka in Friday’s 6-1 win. They walked off again for a 5-4 win Saturday, but were unable to finish the sweep. They lost 5-3 Sunday.
• Injury Updates: Aaron Hicks (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday. Austin Romine (hand) is day-to-day with a bruise after being hit by a pitch. Tyler Austin (hamstring) and Justus Sheffield (oblique) have resumed baseball activities.
• The Yankees landed a new fifth starter in a trade with the Twins. Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns went to Minnesota for Jaime Garcia. Caleb Smith and Chasen Shreve were involved in shuttle moves last week.

• The Yankees opened the week with three games in Minnesota. A comeback fell short in Monday’s 4-2 loss and the offense finally broke out in Tuesday’s 6-3 win. One bad inning sent the Yankees to a 6-1 loss Wednesday.
• A four-game series in Seattle was next. Luis Severino pitched well in Thursday’s 4-1 win, then Aaron Judge nearly hit a ball out of Safeco Field in Friday’s 5-1 win. Two comebacks weren’t enough in Saturday’s 6-5 loss, but the Yankees were able to rebound and win the series with a 6-4 win Sunday.
• Injury Updates: Michael Pineda (elbow) is done for the season following Tommy John surgery. Greg Bird (ankle) will miss 6-8 weeks after having surgery to remove an extra bone. He could return in September. Starlin Castro (hamstring) was placed back on the disabled list. Kyle Higashioka (back) is not close to returning.
• The Yankees made their most significant trade deadline deal in several years last week. They acquired Todd Frazier, David Robertson, and Tommy Kahnle from the White Sox for Blake Rutherford, Ian Clarkin, Tito Polo, and Tyler Clippard. Frazier is the regular third baseman and Chase Headley has moved to first.
• Rob Refsnyder and Ji-Man Choi were designated for assignment to clear 40-man roster space after the trade, and Chasen Shreve was sent down. Refsnyder was traded to the Blue Jays for Ryan McBroom while Choi cleared waivers and will remain in the organization.
• Even after the trade with the White Sox, the Yankees are still looking for a starting pitcher and a first baseman. They’ve spoken to the Athletics about Sonny Gray and Yonder Alonso, and the Mets about Lucas Duda.
• Domingo German, Tyler Wade, Bryan Mitchell, and Caleb Smith and were shuttled in and out throughout the week. Branden Pinder was released.

• The All-Star break was last week, and American hero Aaron Judge won the Home Run Derby with relative ease. The American League won the All-Star Game thanks to Robinson Cano’s tenth inning home run.
• After the All-Star break the Yankees headed to Boston for four games in three days with the Red Sox. Aroldis Chapman blew the save in Friday’s 5-4 loss, though the Yankees rebounded with a 4-1 win Saturday in 16 innings. The Yankees earned a 3-0 win in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, then they lost the second game 3-0.
• Injury Updates: Michael Pineda (elbow) has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and Tommy John surgery has been recommended. He is getting a second opinion. Greg Bird (ankle) has inflammation in his os trigonum and received another cortisone shot. He may need surgery, which would sideline him 6-8 weeks. Pitching prospect Josh Rogers (elbow) is done for the season after having surgery to remove bone spurs.
• Starlin Castro and Matt Holliday were activated off the disabled list and both Rob Refsnyder and Tyler Wade were sent down. Bryan Mitchell, Ben Heller, Jonathan Holder, Caleb Smith, and Domingo German were all involved in shuttle moves following Saturday’s 16-inning game.
• Prime trade target Jose Quintana was traded to the Cubs for four prospects. The Yankees traded Tyler Webb to the Brewers for first baseman Garrett Cooper. They’ve had “cursory” talks with the Marlins about first baseman Justin Bour, and have also spoken to the Padres about Brad Hand and Brandon Mauer, and to the Marlins about David Phelps and A.J. Ramos.
• Seven Yankees made Baseball America’s midseason top 100 prospects list, though only one made Keith Law’s midseason top 50 list.

• The week started with four games in Chicago. The Yankees held on for a 6-5 win Monday before the bullpen melted down in Tuesday’s 4-3 loss. The kids led the Yankees to a 12-3 win Wednesday, then a 4-3 loss Thursday closed out the series.
• The Yankees traveled to Houston next. They picked up a 13-4 win Friday, but the bullpen blew another lead in Saturday’s 7-6 loss. Sunday’s 8-1 loss clinched yet another series defeat.
• Several top prospects were called up to make their MLB debuts last week: Tyler Wade, Miguel Andujar, Dustin Fowler, and Clint Frazier. Fowler suffered a ruptured patella tendon in his first inning as a big leaguer. His season is over. Baseball is the worst.
• Injury Updates: CC Sabathia (hamstring) and Adam Warren (shoulder) are on track to return Tuesday. Matt Holliday (illness), Starlin Castro (hamstring), Aaron Hicks (oblique), and Tyler Austin (hamstring) were all placed on the disabled list. Fowler (knee) is done for the season.
