• Depending who you ask, the Yankees and Pirates either were or were not inching closer to a Gerrit Cole trade last week. Pittsburgh is insisting on Gleyber Torres while the Yankees want to build a package around Clint Frazier.
• The Yankees have some interest in Yu Darvish. Jacoby Ellsbury might consider waiving his no-trade clause for certain teams. The Yankees are “digging into” background and scouting information on Patrick Corbin.
• With some of the international bonus money left over after missing out on Shohei Ohtani, the Yankees signed Venezuelan prospects Raimfer Salinas and Antonio Cabello.
• The Yankees owe $15.7M in luxury tax for the 2017 season, their lowest lowest tax bill since 2011.
• John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman have new contracts for 2018.

• The Yankees made two notable moves last week. First, they traded Chase Headley and Bryan Mitchell to the Padres for Jabari Blash in a salary dump deal. San Diego took on Headley’s entire $13M salary. Second, they agreed to a one-year deal worth $10M with CC Sabathia. Hooray.
• During the Winter Meetings the Yankees were mostly connected to controllable young starters like Gerrit Cole, Michael Fulmer, and Chris Archer. They also talked to the Diamondbacks about Jacoby Ellsbury. Here are our Winter Meetings recaps: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
• The Yankees lost Mike Ford, Nestor Cortes, Jose Mesa Jr., and Anyelo Gomez in the Rule 5 Draft. They took Junior Soto from the Indians in the minor league phase. The Yankees also re-signed Erik Kratz to a minor league deal.
• Josh Bard (bench coach), Phil Nevin (third base coach), Reggie Willits (first base coach), and Carlos Mendoza (infield coach) will all be added to the coaching staff.
• The High-A Tampa Yankees have been rebranded as the Tampa Tarpons.

• In a stunning move, the Yankees are set to acquire Giancarlo Stanton and cash from the Marlins for Starlin Castro, Jorge Guzman, and Jose Devers. Stanton used his no-trade clause to reject deals to the Giants and Cardinals, allowing the Yankees to swoop in.
• Brian Cashman and the Yankees are finally hammering out a contract. Cashman is set to sign a five-year contract worth $25M. His last four contracts were all three-year deals.
• The Yankees are “looking closely” at Cuban outfielder Julio Pablo Martinez now that they have international bonus money to spend after losing out on Shohei Ohtani. They had interest in Dominican shortstop Yunior Severino before he signed with the Twins.
• Once they were eliminated from the Ohtani sweepstakes, the Yankees circled back to CC Sabathia to address their rotation needs. A deal is not imminent as far as we know, but they’re talking.
• Dodgers bullpen coach Josh Bard will be named bench coach. Carlos Beltran could join the Yankees in some capacity. Minor league instructors Reggie Willits and Carlos Mendoza are candidates to join the coaching staff. Triple-A Scranton manager Al Pedrique has left the Yankees to join the A’s.
• Gleyber Torres claimed the top spot in Baseball America’s top ten Yankees prospects list. Guzman, who went to the Marlins in the Stanton trade, was ranked seventh.

• The Yankees will name Aaron Boone their next manager. The team has not made an official announcement yet, but it’s coming. Boone will be the 35th manager in franchise history.
• The Nippon Ham Fighters officially posted Shohei Ohtani, but he already ruled the Yankees out as a potential destination. Ohtani prefers a smaller market team on the West Coast.
• The Yankees took home $10.14M in postseason pool money. They voted 57 full shares at $138,897.63 apiece, plus 15.01 partial shares.
• As expected, the Yankees tendered contracts to all their eligible players prior to Friday’s deadline.

• MLB and NPB agreed to a new posting system with the MLBPA, paving the way for Shohei Ohtani to be posted this offseason. He hasn’t been posted yet, but it is expected to happen fairly soon.
• The Yankees added six players to the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 Draft protection deadline: Albert Abreu, Domingo Acevedo, Gleyber Torres, Thairo Estrada, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Billy McKinney. Torres will have a chance to win a roster spot in Spring Training.
• To clear 40-man space, the Yankees traded Ronald Herrera to the Rangers (for a pitching prospect) and both Garrett Cooper and Caleb Smith to the Marlins (for a pitching prospect and international bonus money).
• Aaron Judge underwent arthroscopic left shoulder surgery that “involved a loose-body removal and cartilage clean-up.” He is expected to be ready in time for Spring Training.
• The Yankees announced their 2018 Spring Training schedule. Pitchers and catchers are due to report to Tampa on Tuesday, February 13th.

• Aaron Judge was unanimously named Rookie of the Year, and he was runner-up to Jose Altuve in the MVP voting. Luis Severino finished third in the Cy Young voting and Joe Girardi finished fourth in the Manager of the Year voting.
• The managerial search continued as the Yankees interviewed Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens (Thursday), ESPN analyst Aaron Boone (Friday), and Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward (Saturday). Larry Rothschild will return as pitching coach next year no matter who the Yankees name manager.
• The MLBPA set today as a deadline to hammer out a posting agreement for Shohei Ohtani. The union is haggling with MLB and NPB because they think too much money would be going to the Nippon Ham Fighters, and not enough to Ohtani.
• The Yankees checked in with the Marlins about Giancarlo Stanton and reportedly have interest in Jurickson Profar. Also, they have not yet asked Jacoby Ellsbury to waive his no-trade clause.
• Nick Rumbelow was traded to the Mariners for minor league pitchers J.P. Sears and Juan Then as the Yankees clear 40-man roster space in advance of today’s Rule 5 Draft protection deadline.
• Chad Green will come to Spring Training as a starting pitcher. There’s no reason not to try it in camp. He can always shift back to the bullpen if it doesn’t work.

• Brian Cashman confirmed the Yankees parted ways with Joe Girardi over concerns he didn’t “communicate and connect” with players. So far the Rob Thomson and Eric Wedge have interviewed for the job. Aaron Boone is also in the mix, and both John Flaherty and David Cone have thrown their hats in the ring too.
• Aaron Judge was named a finalist for the AL Rookie of the Year and AL MVP awards while Luis Severino is a finalist for AL Cy Young. Judge and Gary Sanchez won Silver Sluggers.
• The Nippon Ham Fighters will indeed post Shohei Otani this offseason. He hasn’t been posted yet, however. The (Ham) Fighters only announced their intentional to post Otani at some point.
• The Yankees did not tender any of their free agents the qualifying offer, unsurprisingly. Both Nick Rumbelow and Jake Cave were added to the 40-man roster.
• Baseball Prospectus released their top ten Yankees prospects list. Sixteen Yankees farmhands became minor league free agents.
