Forbes: Minority investment values Yanks at $1.7 billion

September 19, 2011 by Benjamin Kabak 7 Comments

Ray Bartoszek, a commodities trader with a net worth estimated at $5 billion, purchased a minority share of the Yankees today, according to a variety of sources. Forbes says Bartoszek’s investment values the Yanks at nearly $1.7 billion. As ESPN New York detailed, Bartoszek allegedly purchased another minority share from one of the team’s limited partners who wished to sell. The sale will not impact the day-to-day management of the ballclub.

Bartoszek has recently been interested in breaking into the MLB ownership club. He was a runner-up to purchase a stake in the Mets earlier this year, but his offer fell short to David Einhorn’s proposal. Instead he gets the Yanks. Once upon a time, John McMullen said of owning a small piece of the Yanks, “Nothing is more limited than being a limited partner of George’s.” These days, though, it’s a badge of honor and apparently a sound investment indeed.

Open Thread: Go O’s

September 19, 2011 by Mike 258 Comments

I feel dirty saying this, but I’m pulling for Buck Showalter and the Orioles tonight. Baltimore already beat the Red Sox this afternoon, and they’ve got the second game of their doubleheader tonight. After all the stupid stuff Showalter has said this year, after all the “disrespecting Flanny” nonsense, I’m in your corner Buck. Now put your money where you mouth is.

Here’s your open thread, folks. If you want to watch said Orioles-Red Sox matchup (Matusz vs. Lackey), it’ll be on MLB Network. You also have Monday Night Football in New Jersey for the Giants and Rams. Pretty good night for sports. Talk about whatever you want here, have at it.

It’s been a while since we promoted our merchandise, so it’s a good time to get a new design up there. I think this one (courtesy of Tyler Wilkerson) is pretty self-explanatory. There’s a total of a dozen designs available at the RAB Shop now, and you can get them all on t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, all sorts of stuff in a variety of colors. Check it out.

Game 152: Makeup

September 19, 2011 by Mike 501 Comments

If you were expecting the Rays today, I don’t blame you. I completely forgot about this makeup game until Joe reminded me during last Friday’s podcast. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. The Yankees own the Twins, especially at Yankee Stadium.

Anyway, I actually wrote about Scott Diamond (today’s Twins starter) last offseason as a potential Rule 5 Draft target, but the Twins gobbled him up before he ever got to the Yankees. He’s a rather ordinary left-hander, with a low-90’s fastball to go along with his changeup and big overhand curveball. The video above comes from his first career win a few weeks ago. Diamond has only thrown 29.2  IP for Minnesota this year, and in those 29.2 IP he’s struck out 17 and walked 12. Not great, and the rate stats (5.16 K/9 and 3.64 BB/9) are in line with what he’s done at Triple-A since the start of last season. Of course, the Yankees have never seen him before, and that usually means CERTAIN DOOM. Here’s the starting nine…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, LF
Jesus Montero, DH
Russell Martin, C

A.J. Burnett, SP

It’s a 1:05pm ET start today, and you can watch on YES. If you’re stuck in the office, WCBS 880 has the radio call. Enjoy.

Cervelli has been concussion symptom free for three days

September 19, 2011 by Mike 9 Comments

Via Peter Botte and Mark Hale, Frankie Cervelli has been without concussion symptoms for three days now. He and the team are waiting for doctors to evaluate the results of an ImPACT test (more on that here) before making any decisions, so it’s still unclear if he’ll be able to return to the field this year. “I pray every day for that,” said Cervelli, who also confirmed that he’ll be going back to the Great Gazoo helmet.

Frankie’s latest concussion opened up a “who would be the backup catcher in the playoffs?” can of worms, but the Yankees might not even need to carry a clearly defined backup in the postseason. Either way, the important thing is that Cervelli gets healthy and doesn’t rush back.
