• Friday night Masahiro Tanaka announced he will not opt out of his contract. Tanaka could’ve walked away from the final three years and $67M on his deal and tested free agency, but nope, he’s coming back for his age 29-31 seasons.
• Third base coach Joe Espada left to become Astros bench coach. Jerry Hairston Jr. is a candidate for the managerial opening. Hal Steinbrenner will talk to Alex Rodriguez about continuing his instructor role.
• Shohei Otani’s move is on hold as MLB, MLBPA, and NPB quibble over the posting system. Erik Kratz was outrighted and elected free agency. Luis Cessa was activated off the 60-day DL.
• The Yankees named Kevin Reese their new senior director of player development. He replaces the departed Gary Denbo as the farm system head.

• Following their ALCS exit, Brian Cashman and the Yankees parted ways with manager Joe Girardi. Girardi’s contract expired after the season, so technically he wasn’t fired and he didn’t quit. The search for a new manager is underway.
• We’ve yet to hear any firm reports about managerial candidates. Vice president of baseball operations Tim Naehring is not interested, and third base coach Joe Espada is in the mix for coaching positions with the Red Sox and Astros. The next manager will have say into the coaching staff, obviously.
• Player development analyst Dan Greenlee left the Yankees to join Gary Denbo with the Marlins. The Yankees have interviewed pro scouting director Kevin Reese, director of minor league operations Eric Schmitt, director of performance science John Kremer, and field coordinator Carlos Mendoza for Denbo’s former job.
• Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner are among the Gold Glove finalists at their respective positions.

• The week started with the Yankees down 0-2 in the ALCS. Aaron Judge broke out of his slump with a home run in Game Three, helping the Yankees to an 8-1 win Monday. Judge and Gary Sanchez led the comeback charge in Tuesday’s 6-4 win to even the series 2-2. Masahiro Tanaka was dominant in Wednesday’s 5-0 win to give the Yankees a 3-2 series lead.
• The ALCS returned to Houston for Game Six, and the Yankees had no answer for Justin Verlander. They lost 7-1 Friday to set up a decisive winner-take-all Game Seven. The 2017 season came to an end with a 4-0 loss Saturday night.

• The week started with the Yankees down 1-2 to the Indians in the best-of-five ALDS. They continued the comeback with a 7-3 win Monday in Game Four, then punched their ticket to the ALCS with a 5-2 win Wednesday. Amazing.
• The best-of-seven ALCS matchup with the Astros followed Thursday’s off-day. The Yankees couldn’t solve Dallas Keuchel and lost 2-1 Friday in Game One. Justin Verlander dominated in Game Two, as the Yankees again lost 2-1 Saturday. Sunday was an off-day. CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray will start Games Three and Four, respectively.
• Injury Update: Luis Severino (shoulder) was removed from ALCS Game Two as a precaution. He checked out fine with the doctors but could still be sent for precautionary tests.
• Sabathia reiterated that he intends to pitch beyond 2017. The Mets have interest in Joe Girardi, should he and the Yankees part ways. Girardi may walk away to spend time with his family.

• The week started with Monday’s off-day, then on Tuesday, the Yankees faced the Twins with their season on the line in the AL Wild Card Game. Luis Severino got hammered in that game, but the bullpen came to the rescue and the Yankees won 8-4.
• The AL Wild Card Game win meant a date with the Indians in the ALDS. Trevor Bauer dominated the Yankees in the 4-0 Game 1 loss. In Game 2, the Yankees hit Corey Kluber hard, but they blew an 8-3 lead and lost 9-8 in 13 innings. The Yankees stayed alive with a 1-0 win in Game Three.
• Farm system head Gary Denbo is expected to join the Derek Jeter and the Marlins this offseason. Denbo’s contract expires soon.

• The week started with a makeup game against the Royals, a makeup game the Yankees won 11-3 Monday. Aaron Judge hit his 49th and 50th home runs of the season in that game, setting a new rookie record.
• The Rays came to town next. The Yankees clinched homefield advantage in the Wild Card Game with Tuesday’s 6-1 win, then Luis Severino pitched well in his Wild Card Game tune-up start in Wednesday’s 6-1 win. One terrible inning sent the Yankees to a 9-6 loss Thursday.
• The regular season wrapped up with a three-game series against the Blue Jays. Masahiro Tanaka was brilliant in Friday’s 4-0 win, then Judge clocked another home run in Saturday’s 2-1 win. The Yankees closed out the regular season with a 2-1 loss Sunday.
